Long-term effect of styrene and ethylbenzene exposure on fasting plasma glucose: A gene-environment interaction study

Linling Yu et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term exposure to S/EB may potentially increase fasting plasma glucose levels, which may be aggravated by genetic susceptibility. The biomarker MA+PGA and polygenic risk score (PRS) for type 2 diabetes mellitus were significantly associated with fasting plasma glucose levels. Participants with sustained high MA+PGA or high PRS had higher fasting plasma glucose levels over a 3 to 6 year follow-up period. Interaction effects were observed between MA+PGA and PRS on fasting plasma glucose change over the 6 year follow-up.

Arsenic exposure and biomarkers for oxidative stress and telomere length in indigenous populations in Bolivia

Jessica De Loma et al.

Summary: Bolivian women living in the Andes are exposed to arsenic, and the study found that telomere length, mtDNAcn, and 4-HNE-MA were positively associated with arsenic exposure levels and metabolism efficiency. Additional efforts are needed to evaluate and reduce arsenic exposure in this region.

The global burden of disease attributable to high fasting plasma glucose in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019: An updated analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Ruyi Liang et al.

Summary: This study used data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to evaluate the spatial pattern and temporal trend of disease burden attributed to high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) from 1990 to 2019. The results showed that globally, the numbers of deaths and DALYs attributed to HFPG have doubled over the past few decades, particularly in males and in regions with middle socio-demographic index (SDI). This highlights the importance of taking necessary measures to control the growing burden attributed to HFPG.

Correlation between urinary contents of some metals and fasting plasma glucose levels: A cross-sectional study in China

Xiaoting Mo et al.

Summary: This study found that multiple metals in urine are associated with fasting plasma glucose levels, with zinc, selenium, and strontium showing significant correlation. The mixture of metals has a positive overall effect on glucose levels, with zinc contributing the most. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.

Systemic inflammation mediates the association of heavy metal exposures with liver injury: A study in general Chinese urban adults

Xing Wang et al.

Summary: This study found positive dose-response relationships between urinary heavy metals and serum ALT, with vanadium and copper remaining positively associated with ALT in multiple-metal models. Longitudinal analyses showed that every 1-unit increase in log-transformed levels of vanadium and copper was associated with an additional rate of annual ALT increase, with CRP mediating a percentage of the urinary copper- and cadmium-associated ALT elevations.

Summary: The study revealed that aluminum exposure is associated with a decline in lung function and an increased risk of COPD. Higher levels of urinary aluminum were linked to reduced lung function and an elevated risk of developing COPD in the general urban population.

Connections between endoplasmic reticulum stress-associated unfolded protein response, mitochondria, and autophagy in arsenic-induced carcinogenesis

Priya Wadgaonkar et al.

Summary: Arsenic exposure through contaminated drinking water is a global health issue affecting over 200 million people worldwide, leading to various cancers. Research has shifted focus from genetic mutations to epigenetics, metabolism, and endoplasmic reticulum stress in cancer development. Arsenic induces cellular stress through oxidative damage, epigenetic changes, and impairment of DNA repair systems, highlighting the importance of understanding the role of ER stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and autophagy in cancer prevention and treatment.

Arsenic and other metals as phenotype driving electrophiles in carcinogenesis

Summary: Exposure to heavy metals such as cadmium and arsenic has been linked to diseases like neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer. The electrophilic behavior of heavy metals disrupts the redox state of cells, potentially leading to loss of cellular function and phenotype.
