An achieved strategy for magnetic biochar for removal of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones: Adsorption and mechanism studies

Xianzhao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, poplar wood biochar modified with Fe3O4 was used to remove tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. The adsorption behavior was studied through batch experiments and various characterization techniques. The results showed that multiple mechanisms, including pore filling, electrostatic interactions, pi-pi interaction, surface complexation, and hydrogen bond, contributed to the adsorption of antibiotics on MPBC. Moreover, the study demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of MPBC for tetracyclines was significantly higher than that for fluoroquinolones, and the adsorption was favorable at lower ionic strengths and neutral conditions.

Selective adsorption of antibiotics on manganese oxide-loaded biochar and mechanism based on quantitative structure-property relationship model

Xinyi Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, manganese oxide-loaded biochar (MBC) produced from MnCl2-impregnated biomass pyrolysis was investigated for its adsorption behavior on tetracycline, norfloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole. The adsorption capacity followed the order: TTC > NOR > SMX, and the major mechanisms involved were hydrogen bonding, n/fc-fc interactions, electrostatic interaction, surface coordination, and hydrophobic interaction. The presence of manganese oxide particles on MBC enhanced surface coordination and hydrogen bonding. A quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model showed that hydrogen bonding and fc-fc interactions were crucial for the selective adsorption of tetracycline antibiotics. Therefore, MBC has promising potential for antibiotic removal in sewage processing.

Design and preparation magnetic bio-surfactant rhamnolipid-layered double hydroxide nanocomposite as an efficient and recyclable adsorbent for the removal of Rifampin from aqueous solution

Asiyeh Kheradmand et al.

Summary: In this study, a magnetic core-shell rhamnolipid (MCSR) intercalated cobalt/aluminum layered double hydroxide (LDH) was used for water remediation and rifampin (RIF) removal. The biosurfactants, including rhamnolipid (RL), demonstrated low toxicity and environmental compatibility, and promoted the removal efficiency of the adsorbent. The adsorption process was optimized by considering factors such as pH, initial RIF concentration, contact time, and adsorbent dosage. The RIF removal efficiency was found to be 96%, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 221.30 mg/g. The magnetic property of MCSR-LDH allowed for easy recovery and regeneration of the adsorbent.
