Scrutinizing the role of tunable carbon vacancies in g-C3N4 nanosheets for efficient sonophotocatalytic degradation of Tetracycline in diverse water matrices: Experimental study and theoretical calculation

Mani Preeyanghaa et al.

Summary: Metal-free polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (CN) materials have attracted much attention in photocatalytic applications. In this study, we synthesized carbon-vacant CN (FCN) by altering formalin dosage during thermal polymerization. The FCN catalysts exhibited highly efficient sonophotocatalytic degradation of Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of ultrasound and light irradiation, as well as the formation of carbon vacancies that enhanced charge carrier transportation and oxygen adsorption. Reactive oxygen species generated by FCN played a significant role in the degradation pathway of TC molecules.

Surface atom rearrangement on carbon nitride for enhanced photocatalysis degradation of antibiotics under visible light

Yunxiong Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, nitrogen-vacancy and oxygen-substitution modified carbon nitride ((Nv, Os)-CN) with a rearranged surface was fabricated by a low-temperature thermal oxidation strategy. The (Nv, Os)-CN showed higher efficiency in degrading antibiotics under visible light irradiation compared to regular carbon nitride (CN). This enhanced photoactivity can be attributed to the rearranged surface atoms, which promote interfacial charge transfer and build a robust interface. LC-MS and QSAR methods were used to analyze the degraded pathways, intermediates, and risks of the antibiotics. The low-temperature thermal oxidation strategy presented here provides a way to enhance the photoactivity of carbon nitride for antibiotic degradation.

Xufei Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the development of a recyclable dual Z-scheme g-C3N4/BiVO4/CuFe2O4 heterojunction as an efficient photocatalyst for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light illumination. The novel photocatalyst exhibited enhanced photocatalytic degradation behavior for levofloxacin (LEV) compared to single-component counterparts. The addition of PMS further improved the removal efficiency, which was attributed to the synergistic effect between photocatalysis and PMS activation. The system also demonstrated excellent mineralization ability, low degradation product toxicity, and adaptability to various solution conditions.

Removal of tetracycline from wastewater using g-C3N4 based photocatalysts: A review

Akash Balakrishnan et al.

Summary: Tetracycline is one of the most widely used antibiotics in human therapy, veterinary applications, and agricultural activities. Its consumption is expected to increase by over 30% by 2030. This review focuses on the recent advancements in photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline using graphitic carbon nitride-based photocatalysts, which offer higher visible light activity, low cost, and non-toxicity. The properties, worldwide consumption, occurrence, and environmental impacts of tetracycline are comprehensively discussed. The occurrence of tetracycline in various water matrices has been confirmed, with a maximum concentration of 54 μg/L. Among different graphitic carbon nitride-based materials, heterojunctions have shown the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 100% with reusability for up to 5 cycles. Photocatalytic membranes are found to be feasible due to ease of recovery and better reusability. The limitations and efficient solutions for graphitic carbon nitride-based wastewater treatment technology are also emphasized in detail.
