The effect of nitrification inhibitors on the aerobic biodegradation of tetracycline antibiotics in swine wastewater

Linyan Yang et al.

Summary: The aerobic biotreatment process for swine wastewater treatment was optimized using 2-chloro-6-trichloromethylpyridine (TCMP) as a nitrogen fertilizer synergist, to simultaneously achieve antibiotic removal and ammonia retainment. The results showed that a daily dosage of 5-10 mg/L TCMP effectively inhibited nitrification and had varying effects on the removal of COD and tetracycline antibiotics (TCs). The study also found that TCMP had minimal impact on volatilization and hydrolysis, and the overall removal efficiency of TCs was mainly contributed by absorption and biodegradation.

Extracellular polymeric substancesdantibiotics interaction in activated sludge: A review

Weixin Zhao et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, widely used drugs for disease prevention and treatment, contribute to the occurrence and transformation of antibiotic resistance in sewer networks and wastewater treatment systems. This study summarizes the composition and characteristics of microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), highlights their important role in antibiotics removal, evaluates their defense performance against different antibiotics, and analyzes factors affecting the sorption and biotransformation behavior of antibiotics. Furthermore, the interactions between microbial EPS and antibiotic resistance genes are examined, and the potential engineering applications of microbial EPS for antibiotics toxicity detection and defense are emphasized.

Nitrification performance and bacterial community dynamics in a membrane bioreactor with elevated ammonia concentration: The combined inhibition effect of salinity, free ammonia and free nitrous acid on nitrification at high ammonia loading rates

Huaihao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of a nitrification membrane bioreactor to an elevated ammonia loading rate. Effective nitrification performance was achieved under high loading, but became inefficient when ammonia concentration increased further. The study also found an enrichment of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria with increased loading.

Distribution and driving factors of antibiotic resistance genes in treated wastewater from different types of livestock farms

Tao Chen et al.

Summary: Treated wastewater from different types of livestock farms is an important reservoir and source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The distribution and driving factors of ARGs vary among different types of livestock farms, with broiler farms having higher ARG abundance but lower bacterial diversity. The main factor affecting the bacterial community in treated wastewater is the livestock type. Multiple driving factors, including tnpA and NH4+-N, contribute to the distribution of ARGs in treated wastewater.

Summary: Environmental contamination of antibiotics due to over or inappropriate use can promote antimicrobial resistance and have adverse impacts on ecosystems and human health. Bacteria exposed to low concentrations of antibiotics in the environment may exhibit hormetic effects, enhancing their resistance to antibiotics.

The performance of aerobic granular sludge for simulated swine wastewater treatment and the removal mechanism of tetracycline

Xiaochun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was used to treat tetracycline (TC) from swine wastewater, showing that the removal of TC by AGS was mainly due to adsorption and biodegradation, and the contribution rate of biodegradation increased after AGS adaptation to TC. Twenty-two by-products were detected during biodegradation of TC, and the degradation pathway of TC was speculated.

Zewen Tan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Sphingobacterium changzhouense TC931 is a bacterium capable of removing tetracycline through biosorption and biodegradation, with its efficiency being influenced by solution pH and carbon source. Strain TC931 is rich in antibiotic resistance genes and may acquire a genome island (GI) through horizontal gene transfer, providing insights into its application in bioremediation.
