Urban nature at the fingertips: Investigating wild food foraging to enable nature interactions of urban dwellers

Christoph Schunko et al.

Summary: The study found that many urban residents have experience with foraging wild foods, with frequency of foraging related to plant species and forms. Those who foraged more frequently had greater nature relatedness, more childhood foraging experiences, and lived on the outskirts of the city.

Food Behavior in Emergency Time: Wild Plant Use for Human Nutrition during the Conflict in Syria

Naji Sulaiman et al.

Summary: Wild food plants have played an important role in providing food during the conflict in Syria, with an increase in reliance on these plants reported by local people. Species such as Origanum syriacum, Rhus coriaria, Eryngium creticum, and Cichorium intybus were frequently mentioned by informants. Steamed leafy vegetables, breakfast/dinner dishes, and soup were the most popular wild plant-based meals.

Conjugative transfer of multi-drug resistance IncN plasmids from environmental waterborne bacteria to Escherichia coli

Jessica Guzman-Otazo et al.

Summary: This study found that environmental bacterial communities from the highly contaminated La Paz River basin in Bolivia have the potential to transfer antibiotic resistance genes to Escherichia coli. The predominant plasmids in the transconjugants belonged to the incompatibility group N and were verified to be mobile. Interestingly, all transconjugants also acquired the class 1 integron intl1. Metal resistance genes were found to have a minor role in the spread of multidrug-resistant plasmids at the investigated sites.

Twenty-year trends in antimicrobial resistance from aquaculture and fisheries in Asia

Daniel Schar et al.

Summary: The study found concerning levels of resistance to medically important antimicrobials in aquatic food animals in Asia. The resistance rate in aquaculture remained stable between 2000 and 2018, while in fisheries it decreased. Resistance hotspots were identified along major river systems and coastal waters of China and India, with eastern China and India benefiting most from future surveillance efforts.

Draft Genome Sequences of Seven Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli Strains Isolated from New Zealand Waterways

Sara A. Burgess et al.

Summary: Seven ESBL-producing Escherichia coli strains were identified in New Zealand waterways, with three isolates showing a multidrug-resistant genotype. The genomes had an average size of 5.1Mb and contained the ESBL gene bla(CTX-M) and plasmid-mediated AmpC gene bla(CMY-2).
