Magnetic fields generated by the DC cables of offshore wind farms have no effect on spatial distribution or swimming behavior of lesser sandeel larvae (Ammodytes marinus)

Alessandro Cresci et al.

Summary: The behavior of lesser sandeel larvae was tested in the magnetic fields produced by High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) subsea cables. The study found that the magnetic fields did not impact the larvae's distribution or swimming behavior. However, the possibility of later life stages being affected cannot be ruled out.

Biological Effects of Non-Ionizing Electromagnetic Fields at 27 GHz on Sperm Quality of Mytilus galloprovincialis

Roberta Pecoraro et al.

Summary: This study investigated the in vitro effect of 27 GHz electromagnetic fields on the quality of Mytilus galloprovincialis sperm. Results showed that sperm motility decreased after 10 minutes of exposure, and after 30 minutes, most sperm cells became immobile and non-vital. This study provides useful data on the potential impact of high-band 5G on animal fertility, which is currently under investigation.

Do magnetic fields related to submarine power cables affect the functioning of a common bivalve?

Magdalena Jakubowska-Lehrmann et al.

Summary: The study found that cockles exposed to SMF had lower filtration rates, while those exposed to EMF had decreased ammonia excretion rates, and both fields led to increased protein carbonylation. Additionally, significant inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity was observed after exposure to EMF.

Ecotoxicological effects of the UV-filter 4-MBC on sperms and adults of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis

Alessia Cuccaro et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of the UV-filter 4-methylbenzylidenecam-phor (4-MBC) on the mussel species Mytilus galloprovincialis, finding that it may impair fitness and survival of the mussels, affecting reproduction success and population growth. The results showed that sperms were more sensitive to 4-MBC than adults, with physiological and structural impairments observed at both the cellular and molecular levels. High bioaccumulation of 4-MBC was also observed in exposed mussels.

Sperm quality assessment in Ficopomatus enigmaticus (Fauvel, 1923): Effects of selected organic and inorganic chemicals across salinity levels

Alessia Cuccaro et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of five trace elements, a surfactant, and a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon on the sperm quality of Ficopomatus enigmaticus. Organic contaminants were found to have a more significant impact on sperm quality compared to inorganic compounds, and the species showed high tolerance to salinity variation, making it a promising model organism for ecotoxicological analyses. Easy and rapid methods on polychaete spermatozoids were effective for assessing marine and brackish water pollution.

Map-like use of Earth's magnetic field in sharks

Bryan A. Keller et al.

Summary: The use of magnetic map cues can trigger homeward orientation in bonnethead sharks, and the derivation of positional information from a magnetic map may help explain aspects of their genetic structure. These results provide a compelling explanation for how migratory routes and population structure are maintained in marine environments.

A modelling evaluation of electromagnetic fields emitted by buried subsea power cables and encountered by marine animals: Considerations for marine renewable energy development

Zoe L. Hutchison et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of the marine renewable energy industry will lead to increased prevalence of electromagnetic fields from power cables in coastal waters. Protecting cables by burial may help mitigate potential impacts, but realistic modelling of scenarios is needed to assess the effects properly.

Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) from Submarine Power Cables Can Trigger Strength-Dependent Behavioural and Physiological Responses in Edible Crab, Cancer pagurus (L.)

Kevin Scott et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different strength EMF exposure on edible crabs, finding that 250 muT had limited impacts while 500 muT and 1000 muT disrupted physiological rhythms and behaviors. Crabs showed attraction to shelters exposed to 500 muT and 1000 muT EMF with reduced roaming time, highlighting the importance of in-situ measurements for understanding the effects of anthropogenic EMF on marine organisms.

A call to assess the impacts of electromagnetic fields from subsea cables on the movement ecology of marine migrants

A. Peter Klimley et al.

Summary: The number of subsea cables in the marine environment is expected to increase significantly, potentially disrupting the magnetic orientation and navigation of marine animals that rely on magnetic cues. Studies on the impact of anthropogenic magnetic fields on marine species should be prioritized due to their cultural, economic, and conservation value.
