House dust mite allergens and nitrated products: Identification and risk assessment in indoor dust

Fan Xu et al.

Summary: This study identified the occurrence of nitrated products of major house dust mite (HDM) allergens in dust samples from college dormitories in eastern China. The levels of nitrated HDM allergens were found to be higher during winter, in dormitories of lower altitude, and with female occupants. The findings highlight the potential health risks associated with nitrated HDM allergens in the environment.

Ambient air pollutants increase the risk of immunoglobulin E-mediated allergic diseases: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Hua Wang et al.

Summary: Recent meta-analysis indicates that exposure to air pollutants may increase the risk of IgE-mediated allergic diseases, including eczema, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 and PM10, as well as short-term exposure to NO2 and SO2, are associated with these allergic diseases.

Pollution and health: a progress update

Richard Fuller et al.

Summary: The Lancet Commission on pollution and health reported that pollution was responsible for 9 million premature deaths in 2015, making it the world's largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death. Updated data from 2019 shows that pollution is still responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, with reductions in some types of pollution offset by increases in others. Despite efforts, little progress has been made in addressing pollution, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries.

Coarse Particulate Air Pollution and Daily Mortality A Global Study in 205 Cities

Cong Liu et al.

Summary: This study provides novel global evidence on the robust and independent associations between short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5-10 and total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality, suggesting the need to establish a unique guideline or regulatory limit for daily concentrations of PM2.5-10.

Recovery of reduced thiol groups by superoxide-mediated denitrosation of nitrosothiols

Stefan Schildknecht et al.

Summary: The present study provides evidence for the non-enzymatic denitrosation of nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) by superoxide, leading to the release of nitric oxide and subsequent formation of peroxynitrite. The recovery of enzyme activity in S-nitrosated enzymes by superoxide appears to be selective, while the interaction between GSNO and superoxide can represent a mechanism to regain reducing equivalents in situations of excess superoxide formation.

The identification of tyrosine-nitrated human serum albumin in airborne particulate matter from Japan

Noriyoshi Ogino et al.

Summary: Atmospheric particulate matter has been recognized as a global health risk, with studies focusing on identifying harmful components. This study found human serum albumin (HSA) bound to PM in Japan, with evidence of tyrosine nitration, a chemical modification from environmental pollutants. HSA was detected in various PM samples, indicating its presence in airborne particles.
