Shipping can be achieved but cargo arrives with damage-titanium dioxide nanoparticles affect the DNA of Pacific oyster sperm

Isabel B. Oliveira et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NP) have reproductive toxicity to humans and fish, but their effects on marine bivalves, specifically oysters, are still unknown. In this study, Pacific oyster sperm was directly exposed to two concentrations of TiO2 NP (1 and 10 mg/L) for a short term (1 h), and sperm motility, antioxidant responses, and DNA integrity were assessed. Although no changes were observed in sperm motility and antioxidant activities, the indicator of genetic damage increased at both concentrations, indicating that TiO2 NP affects the DNA integrity of oyster sperm. This vulnerability of Pacific oyster sperm to TiO2 NP highlights the importance of studying the effects of NP exposure on broadcast spawners.

Impairment of ovarian follicular development caused by titanium dioxide nanoparticles exposure involved in the TGF-β/BMP/Smad pathway

Jianhui Ji et al.

Summary: This study found that titanium dioxide nanoparticles can cause damage to the reproductive system in mice, particularly inhibiting ovarian follicular development. The inhibition appears to be mediated by changes in hormone levels and molecular expression, possibly through the TGF-beta signaling pathway.

Ecotoxicological Properties of Titanium Dioxide Nanomorphologies in Daphnia magna

Freddy Mendoza-Villa et al.

Summary: The structural, vibrational, morphological, and colloidal properties of commercial 15.1 nm TiO2 nanoparticles and nanowires were studied to determine their ecotoxicological properties. Acute ecotoxicity experiments were conducted in Daphnia magna, and the results showed that the LC50 values for TiO2 nanowires and nanoparticles were 157 mg L-1 and 166 mg L-1, respectively. The reproduction rate of D. magna was delayed after exposure to TiO2 nanomorphologies, and the harmful effects of TiO2 nanowires were found to be more severe than those of TiO2 nanoparticles.

Effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2)/activated carbon (AC) nanoparticle on the growth and immunity of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii: potential toxicological risks to the aquatic crustaceans

Ziqi Guo et al.

Summary: Nanomaterials, with their unique physicochemical characteristics, have been widely applied in various fields. However, the large-scale production and application of nanomaterials have led to their release into the water environment, posing potential toxicity to aquatic organisms. This study aims to investigate the effects of exposure to titanium dioxide/activated carbon composite nanomaterials on growth and immunity in Macrobrachium rosenbergii.

Systemic effect of TiO2 micro- and nanoparticles after acute exposure in a murine model

Mariela Gisele Domingo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the biological response of lung, liver, and kidneys to acute exposure to titanium dioxide. The results showed increased titanium concentration in the plasma and target organs after one month of exposure. Histopathological analysis revealed the presence of particles, but no structural changes were observed. Oxidative metabolism in the lung, liver, and kidneys showed alterations, with decreased antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver. Determination of serum biochemical markers and analysis of oxidative metabolism were not early bioindicators of tissue damage.

Summary: This in vitro study investigates the effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on porcine prepubertal Sertoli cells (SCs). The results show that exposure to TiO2 NPs leads to morphological and ultrastructural changes in the cells, as well as apoptosis and alterations in gene expression related to cell functionality. This study provides a foundation for further in vivo research.

Polystyrene microplastics disrupt the blood-testis barrier integrity through ROS-Mediated imbalance of mTORC1 and mTORC2

Yuexin Wei et al.

Summary: Exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) has been found to decrease sperm quality and quantity in male Balb/c mice. This is likely due to the disruption of blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity, induced by PS-MPs causing cytoskeleton disorganization and imbalanced mTORC1 and mTORC2 activities via increased ROS levels.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Infection Compromises the Blood-Testis Barrier by Disturbing mTORC1-mTORC2 Balance

Yongning Lu et al.

Summary: The destruction of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) following uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) infection may be a critical component of orchitis pathogenesis. Abnormal activation of the mTOR signaling pathway is associated with BTB impairment during UPEC-induced orchitis. Rapamycin can protect the BTB and does not aggravate spermatogenic degeneration in infected rats.

Inhibition of testosterone synthesis induced by oral TiO2 NPs is associated with ROS-MAPK(ERK1/2)-StAR signaling pathway in SD rat

Shanji Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) can cause reproductive toxicity in adult male SD rats by inhibiting testosterone synthesis and inducing cell arrangement disorder and tissue lesions. Anatase was found to be more toxic than rutile, possibly acting through the ROS-MAPK-StAR signaling pathway. Regulation on the use of TiO2 NPs is warranted based on these findings.
