NiS@CdS interfacial Schottky junction boosting spatial charge separation for highly efficient photocatalytic reduction of U(VI)

Zemin Qin et al.

Summary: Effective removal of uranium (U) from U-containing wastewater is crucial for the sustainable development of the nuclear power industry. This study successfully synthesized NiS@CdS interfacial Schottky junction photocatalysts with different Ni/Cd molar ratios. The photocatalysts showed high U(VI) removal efficiency and recyclability, thanks to their favorable Zeta potential, optical characteristics, narrow band gap, and high stability. The existence of an interfacial Schottky junction between CdS and NiS was confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, which enhances spatial charge separation. The reduction of U(VI) to uraninite was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterizations. This work potentially offers a new avenue for cost-effective U removal from U-containing wastewater.

Removal and recovery of aqueous uranium using photocatalytic reduction method: Performance and implication

Zemin Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, immobilized photocatalyst TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) were synthesized and used for the photocatalytic extraction of hexavalent U (U(VI)) from wastewater. The anodization voltage and annealing temperature affected the surface morphology and crystallographic composition of TNAs, and TNAs with specific characteristics showed rapid U(VI) extraction. Other factors, such as solution pH and U(VI) concentration, were also investigated. The photocatalytic extraction efficiency of U(VI) was found to be over 54% after 3 cycles of UV-light irradiation, and an electrooxidation method for U recovery was proposed.

Modified Biochar for Arsenic Immobilization in Soil: A Critical Review

Jingzi Beiyuan et al.

Summary: Arsenic (As) is a potentially toxic element (PTE) that poses adverse effects on human health globally through soil and groundwater contamination. Biochar has gained significant interest as a soil amendment for enhancing soil fertility, immobilizing PTEs, and acting as a carbon stabilizer. However, pristine biochar has shown unsatisfactory results for soil As immobilization due to its increased soil pH and electrostatic repulsion between the biochar surface and As anions. Recent studies have proposed various methods of modifying biochar to overcome these limitations and improve As immobilization performance in soil. This review summarizes these studies, focusing on modification methods and performance evaluation, and provides insights into the science behind designing biochar for long-term stability.

Effective inspissation of uranium(VI) from radioactive wastewater using flow electrode capacitive deionization

Jian Zhou et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) as a method to concentrate radioactive wastewater has been assessed for the first time in this study. The results showed that uranium (U) can accumulate into the electrolyte and on activated carbon in the flow electrode, with a removal efficiency of over 99% during each cycle. Analysis of XPS revealed the migration route and valence change of U in the flow electrode, explaining its high adsorption capacity in FCDI. Long-term experiments demonstrated that the low concentration feed water could be concentrated by 47 times, achieving a final concentration of 2843 mg L-1 U. Under optimized conditions, FCDI achieved a charge efficiency of 86% and a low energy consumption of 2.03 mg J(-1). Overall, FCDI shows promise as a method for treating radioactive wastewater, with high removal rate, excellent concentration effect, and low energy consumption.

Graphene oxide-mediated the reduction of U(VI), Re(VII), Se(VI) and Se(IV) by Fe(II) in aqueous solutions investigated via combined batch, DFT calculation and spectroscopic approaches

Junjie Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was found to mediate the reduction of U(VI), Re(VII), Se(VI), and Se(IV) in aqueous Fe(II) solution. The enhanced reduction effects of GO were attributed to facilitated electron transfer and decreased redox potential. The presence of dissolved fulvic acid (FA) significantly promoted GO-mediated reduction. GO plays an important role in mediating the reductive immobilization of radionuclides in redox-stratified environments.
