Global water shortage and potable water safety; Today's concern and tomorrow's crisis

Maryam Salehi

Summary: Global water shortages due to various factors have led to water utilities and consumers adopting different practices to cope, which may pose risks to water quality. It is important to conduct consistent monitoring and implement mitigation strategies to reduce potential risks.

Studying the combined influence of microplastics' intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics on their weathering behavior and heavy metal transport in storm runoff

Amali Herath et al.

Summary: This study investigates the weathering and contaminant transport behavior of primary and secondary microplastics in the environment. The results demonstrate that the polymer structure, crystallinity, surface oxidation, and external sediments attachment influence the photodegradation kinetics and metal uptake of microplastics.

Plastic litter fate and contaminant transport within the urban environment, photodegradation, fragmentation, and heavy metal uptake from storm runoff

Md Hadiuzzaman et al.

Summary: A significant amount of plastic litter in urban areas contaminates the environment and poses a threat to ecological safety. This study focuses on investigating the degradation of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics (MPs) through accelerated weathering experiments. The research analyzes the surface chemistry and morphology of the MPs and evaluates their fragmentation behavior and ability to transport heavy metals in the urban environment. The study provides valuable insights into the persistence and contaminant transport of MPs, contributing to the understanding of their negative impacts on ecosystems.

Methylacidimicrobium thermophilum AP8, a Novel Methane- and Hydrogen-Oxidizing Bacterium Isolated From Volcanic Soil on Pantelleria Island, Italy

Nunzia Picone et al.

Summary: The Favara Grande in Italy's Pantelleria Island is a geothermal area with high temperatures and low pH levels, providing a niche for chemolithotrophic thermoacidophiles including the lanthanide-dependent methanotrophs. A new thermophilic species Methylacidimicrobium thermophilum AP8 was isolated and characterized, with optimal growth conditions at 50°C and pH 3-5. The strain showed high expression of key genes for methane oxidation and lanthanide-dependent metabolism, expanding knowledge on verrucomicrobial methanotrophs in hydrothermal environments.

Influence of pipe materials on the microbial community in unchlorinated drinking water and biofilm

K. L. G. Learbuch et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of different pipe materials on microbial populations in water and biofilm under semi-stagnant conditions. The results showed that pipe materials affect ATP concentrations, gene copy numbers of specific microbial groups, and bacterial community composition. Different materials had different effects on microbial communities in water and biofilm.

Uptake of Pb(II) onto microplastic-associated biofilms in freshwater: Adsorption and combined toxicity in comparison to natural solid substrates

Kun Qi et al.

Summary: This study found that microplastic-associated biofilms can enhance the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) onto microplastics in urban lakes and reservoirs, but natural substrates still exhibit higher adsorption capacity. Ionic strength and pH significantly influence the adsorption of Pb(II) on all solid substrates, especially under neutral conditions where competitive adsorption occurs between anthropogenic and natural substrates.
