Hydrogen and dark oxygen drive microbial productivity in diverse groundwater ecosystems

S. Emil Ruff et al.

Summary: This study investigated the age, geochemistry, and microbiology of groundwater samples from 95 monitoring wells in 14 aquifers in Canada. The results showed the presence of diverse microbial communities and large-scale aerobic and anaerobic cycling in the groundwater. Older groundwater contained more cells and higher concentrations of oxygen, highlighting their importance in sustaining productive subsurface ecosystems.

Metagenomic analysis reveals specific BTEX degrading microorganisms of a bacterial consortium

Hui-jun Wu et al.

Summary: Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination is a major concern for the environment and public health. In this study, a microbial consortium capable of degrading petroleum hydrocarbons was enriched using crude oil. 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed the structural characteristics of this community, while metagenomic analysis identified the specific microbial organisms and metabolic pathways involved in the degradation of cyclohexane and BTEX components. The results demonstrated the synergistic interactions between different bacterial genera during the hydrocarbon degradation process.

Bioaugmentation potential evaluation of a bacterial consortium composed of isolated Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus for degrading benzene, toluene and styrene in sludge and sewage

Shoushuai Feng et al.

Summary: Bioaugmentation using a bacterial consortium of Pseudomonas putida SW-3 and Rhodococcus ruber SS-4 successfully degraded benzene, toluene, and styrene pollutants with an efficiency of up to 97.9%. The balanced bacterial community structure established after intervention led to an increase in the abundance of BTS-degrading bacteria, enhancing the overall degradation capability of the bacterial community.

Coupling of biostimulation and bioaugmentation for enhanced bioremoval of chloroethylenes and BTEX from clayey soil

Junhui Li et al.

Summary: The bioremoval potential of Pseudomonas plecoglossicida for mixed contaminants was explored through optimizing nutrients and inoculum size, achieving effective removal of a mixture of pollutants including BTEX, TCE, and cis-DCE. The study found that a specific C:N:P ratio and higher inoculum size led to significant removal of various contaminants.

Sustainable production and co-immobilization of cold-active enzymes from Pseudomonas sp. for BTEX biodegradation

Saba Miri et al.

Summary: In this study, cold-active ToMO and C1,2D were produced using a newly isolated psychrophilic Pseudomonas S2TR-14 in a minimal salt medium supplemented with crustacean waste and different concentrations of used motor oil. Immobilized enzymes on micro/nano biochar-chitosan matrices showed high enzyme production and increased storage stability, leading to efficient degradation of BTEX in contaminated groundwater and soil. Integrated use of microbiochar and nanobiochar with chitosan for co-immobilization of ToMO and C1,2D can be a potential way to remove petroleum hydrocarbons with higher efficiency from contaminated sites.
