Seawater intrusion: an appraisal of taxa at most risk and safe salinity levels

Catia Venancio et al.

Summary: Seawater intrusion into low-lying coastal ecosystems poses environmental risks, especially for sensitive ecological taxa such as zooplankton, amphibian early life stages, and freshwater mussels. Establishing safe salinity levels is important, as small increments in salinity or seawater intrusions can have severe effects on these ecosystems. Research suggests that NaCl is a slightly more toxic surrogate for seawater and can be used in risk assessments.

Freshwater salinisation: a research agenda for a saltier world

David Cunillera-Montcusi et al.

Summary: The salinisation of freshwater ecosystems is a significant threat, affecting biodiversity and human societies. Understanding its ecological and evolutionary consequences is still a challenge, with various research gaps identified. Focusing on global- and landscape-scale processes, functional approaches, genetic and molecular levels, and ecoevolutionary dynamics can help predict the impacts of freshwater salinisation.

The Acute Toxicity of Salinity in Onshore Unconventional Gas Waters to Freshwater Invertebrates in Receiving Environments: A Systematic Review

Daniel J. Willems et al.

Summary: The global expansion of industries such as unconventional natural gas has led to the production of wastewater that poses a toxic threat to freshwater invertebrates, primarily due to high levels of sodium and chloride content and the toxicity of other major ions.

Fipronil and 2,4-D effects on tropical fish: Could avoidance response be explained by changes in swimming behavior and neurotransmission impairments?

Raquel Aparecida Moreira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity mechanisms of two commonly used pesticides in Brazilian sugarcane production (fipronil and 2,4-D) on zebrafish and serpae tetra, including their swimming behavior and neurotoxic effects. The results indicated that these pesticides impact fish avoidance behavior and neuroactivity.
