Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Antibiotic resistance in the environment

D. G. Joakim Larsson et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global health challenge, with factors driving evolution and transmission being important to quantify and identify. The environment plays a crucial role, and understanding and managing the resistance crisis can be achieved through implementing monitoring and assessment methods to reduce risks.

Antimicrobial resistance: Prevalence, economic burden, mechanisms of resistance and strategies to overcome

Thiruchelvi Pulingam et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a major global health concern that could result in millions of deaths if the current trend of inappropriate and excessive antibiotic use continues. This review highlights the economic burden of antibiotic resistance, recent cases linked to various bacteria, and potential strategies to overcome resistance.

Modelling the Future Clinical and Economic Burden of Antimicrobial Resistance: The Feasibility and Value of Models to Inform Policy

Nadine T. Hillock et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing threat to public health and the economy, governments internationally are interested in models to estimate the future clinical and economic burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of interventions to prevent or control resistance and to inform resource-allocation decision making. The accuracy of models predicting the future economic burden of AMR depends on the accuracy of predicting future resistance rates. However, there is substantial uncertainty in predicting future resistance rates, which could mislead policy decision-making.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Its Spread Is a Global Threat

Mohammed M. Aljeldah

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a worldwide challenge to human wellbeing and a major public health concern. Establishing global health solutions and raising awareness about the importance of AMR control are necessary. AMR increases treatment complexity and poses challenges to existing guidelines.

Disease burden, associated mortality and economic impact of antimicrobial resistant infections in Australia

Teresa M. Wozniak et al.

Summary: This study estimated the health and economic impact of five hospital-associated AMR pathogens in Australia in 2020. It found that there were 1,031 AMR-associated deaths from these infections, with respiratory infections and bloodstream infections having the highest odds of dying and resulting in high hospital costs. The study highlights the need for country-level estimates of AMR impact to inform programs and policies to reduce morbidity and mortality.

Antidrug resistance in the Indian ambient waters of Ahmedabad during the COVID-19 pandemic

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the consumption of antimicrobial substances, subsequently resulting in higher prevalence of antidrug resistance in Escherichia coli (E. coli) in ambient water bodies. The rise in ADR, particularly towards non-fluoroquinolone drugs, is associated with effective SARS-CoV-2 gene copies and may pose a risk even in areas where wastewater treatment plants show less increase in ADR.
