Nanomaterial Characterization in Complex Media-Guidance and Application

Yves Uwe Hachenberger et al.

Summary: This study investigated CuO NPs through various dissolution experiments and characterized NPs time-dependently using DLs and ICP-MS. The advantages and challenges of each analytical approach were evaluated and discussed. Additionally, a new DI sp-ICP-MS technique was developed and evaluated for assessing the size distribution curve of the dissolved particles. This study can provide guidance in choosing the optimal analytical method for NP characterization and determining the origin of an adverse effect in NP toxicity.

Nanomaterials: a review of emerging contaminants with potential health or environmental impact

Amer S. El-Kalliny et al.

Summary: Nanotechnologies have gained significant attention in various sectors due to the unique properties of nanomaterials. However, there is limited research on the environmental contaminants of nanomaterials compared to their applications. This review aims to address this research gap by providing information on the fate, impact, toxicity, and risk of nanomaterials as emerging environmental contaminants. There are notable knowledge gaps in understanding the chemical properties and potential toxicities of nanomaterials, which necessitates the development of extraction methods, detection tools, and characterization technologies for risk assessment. Integrated treatment technologies, such as membrane technology, are recommended for the removal of nanomaterial contaminants in water and air.

Natural organic matter composition and nanomaterial surface coating determine the nature of platinum nanomaterial-natural organic matter corona

Mohammed Baalousha et al.

Summary: The composition of PtNM-NOM corona varies with the composition of the original NOM. The relative abundance of heteroatom formulas is higher in the PVP-PtNM-NOM corona than in the citrate-PtNM corona, indicating preferential partitioning of heteroatom-rich molecules to NM surfaces. The abundance of CHO, heteroatom formulas, and condensed hydrocarbons in PtNM-NOM corona increases with the increase in NOM isolates.

Nanowaste: Another Future Waste, Its Sources, Release Mechanism, and Removal Strategies in the Environment

Zahra Zahra et al.

Summary: Nanowaste refers to waste derived from materials with dimensions in the range of 1-100 nm. The increased production and consumption of nanomaterials have resulted in a substantial amount of nanowaste, which raises concerns about its fate and impact on the environment. However, there is currently a lack of available information on the appropriate standards for identifying, monitoring, and managing nanowaste. Further research is needed to address this issue.

Aggregation, solubility and cadmium-adsorption capacity of CuO nanoparticles in aquatic environments: Effects of pH, natural organic matter and component addition sequence

Yinlong Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aggregation, solubility, and Cd-adsorption of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) co-existing with humic acid (HA) and Cd2+. The results showed that pH was more influential on NP aggregation, while the contact sequence played a major role in determining NP solubility. Pre-equilibration of CuO NPs and HA before adding Cd2+ resulted in the highest solubility and lowest aggregation of the NPs.

Felicia Pereira de Albuquerque et al.

Summary: The study investigated the ecotoxicological effects of solid lipid nanoparticles and atrazine on Chironomus sancticaroli larvae. It found that both nanoparticles loaded with atrazine and nanoparticles without atrazine had toxic effects on the larvae, causing mortality and biochemical alterations. Atrazine alone also exhibited toxic and lethal effects on the larvae.

Aquatic Environment Exposure and Toxicity of Engineered Nanomaterials Released from Nano-Enabled Products: Current Status and Data Needs

Mbuyiselwa Shadrack Moloi et al.

Summary: The rapid commercialization of nano-enabled products has increased the potential environmental release of engineered nanomaterials along the product life cycle. Studies show that the engineered nanomaterials released from products are mainly associated with the matrix of the respective nano-enabled products, which can hinder the proper isolation of nano-driven toxicity effects. Despite current limitations in ecotoxicology data, risk estimation suggests elevated risks to fish from fabrics' PR-nAg, and potential effects on algae, echinoderms, and crustaceans from sunscreens' PR-nZnO and PR-nTiO(2), with no significant risk to echinoderms from PR-nTiO(2).

Foliar absorption and field herbicidal studies of atrazine-loaded polymeric nanoparticles

Vanessa Takeshita et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles loaded with atrazine exhibit better weed control efficacy with faster absorption rates and higher inhibition of photosystem II activity compared to the commercial formulation. The nanoencapsulation potentiates post-emergent herbicidal activity of atrazine, particularly in field conditions, providing a two-fold increase in weed control compared to commercial atrazine. The design of this carrier system enables improvements in herbicide performance in the field with reduced risk of environmental losses due to faster absorption.
