Evaluation of the bisphenol A-induced vascular toxicity on human umbilical artery

Maria Ines Fonseca et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of BPA on the vasculature during pregnancy using human umbilical arteries. The results showed that exposure to BPA may interfere with vasorelaxant response by modulating sGC and activating BKCa channels, leading to disruption of the NO/sGC/cGMP/PKG pathway. Additionally, the study found that BPA can modulate the reactivity of human umbilical arteries, increasing the activity of L-type Ca2+ channels, which is a common vascular response in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

First In Vivo Insights on the Effects of Tempol-Methoxycinnamate, a New UV Filter, as Alternative to Octyl Methoxycinnamate, on Zebrafish Early Development

Elisabetta Damiani et al.

Summary: The demand for organic UV filters as active components in sunscreen products has increased rapidly due to growing awareness of the hazards of UV radiation. However, their extensive use has raised concerns about their effects on aquatic organisms. This study used zebrafish to investigate the effects of exposure to a derivative of the popular UV filter octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), called tempol-methoxycinnamate (TMC). The results showed that while OMC exposure increased stress and oxidative response genes, TMC had reduced toxicity and exhibited antioxidant activity. Furthermore, TMC and OMC showed different interactions with hormone receptors, suggesting TMC as a more environmentally friendly alternative UV filter.

UV-B filter octylmethoxycinnamate-induced vascular endothelial disruption on rat aorta: In silico and in vitro approach

Margarida Lorigo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of the UV-B filter octylmethoxycinnamate (OMC) on rat aorta vasculature and found that OMC can relax the rat aorta through multiple mechanisms, potentially causing hypotension by excessive NO release and blockade of L-Type voltage-operated Ca2+ channels.

Human Umbilical Cord: Information Mine in Sex-Specific Medicine

Ilaria Campesi et al.

Summary: Biological differences between sexes start in utero and continue on to fetal programming, yet there is a lack of stratification by sex in many biomedical fields. The sex of donors in biological research must be known, as variations in cells and cellular components can be important for pharmacological studies. This review highlights the importance of considering sex differences in research, particularly in the umbilical cord and fetal programming, in order to promote innovative research.
