Generating dual-active species by triple-atom sites through peroxymonosulfate activation for treating micropollutants in complex water

Qixing Zhou et al.

Summary: This study designs asymmetric Co-O-Bi triple-atom sites in Co-doped Bi2O2CO3 catalyst, which enhances the electron transfer between active sites and enables simultaneous PMS oxidation and reduction. The synergistic effect of SO4 center dot-, center dot OH, and 1O2 achieves efficient removal and mineralization of micropollutants in complex wastewater. This work provides a structural regulation approach for controlling catalytic function and guiding the rational design of Fenton-like catalysts.

Enhanced carbon emission driven by the interaction between functional microbial community and hydrocarbons: An enlightenment for carbon cycle

Zelin Hou et al.

Summary: Soil microbial communities play a key role in the global element cycling, and oil contamination can lead to increased carbon emissions by altering the microbial community structure. However, the understanding of the complex interactions between environmental factors and biological communities is lacking. This study found that carbon emissions increased in oil-contaminated soils, driven by the enrichment of rare degrading microorganisms in the aerobic layer. Petroleum hydrocarbons and environmental factors equally shape the structure and functional traits of microbial communities. The variability of rare hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms is of greater concern than changes in dominant microorganisms in oil-contaminated soil.

Potential contribution of chlorella vulgaris to carbon-nitrogen turnover in freshwater ecosystems after a great sandstorm event

Zelin Hou et al.

Summary: Urban lakes play a crucial role in the cycling of elements and stabilization of regional climate. However, the impacts of extreme weather events on carbon-nitrogen cycling in these ecosystems are unclear. A microcosm experiment using Chlorella vulgaris showed that sandstorm events increased dissolved inorganic carbon and affected photosynthesis pathways. Plant biomass accumulation and metabolism enriched carbon into residues, which served as an energy source for decomposers. This study provides insight into the formation of water carbon pools and challenges the traditional theory of dissolved carbonates as carbon sinks.

Commonwealth of Soil Health: How Do Earthworms Modify the Soil Microbial Responses to CeO2 Nanoparticles?

Wenxing Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of CeO2 nanoparticles on soil microbial responses and how earthworms can mitigate these effects. CeO2 NPs alone decrease enzyme activities involved in soil N and P cycles, but earthworm presence alleviates these effects. Both CeO2 NPs and earthworms alter soil bacterial community and metabolite profiles, with more significant changes observed under CeO2 NP exposure with earthworms.

Long-distance transit alters liver and skeletal muscle physiology of beef cattle

E. L. Deters et al.

Summary: Transportation of cattle has negative impacts on animal health and production efficiency. This study investigated the physiological responses of beef steers to long-distance road transit and found that it resulted in reduced feed intake and body weight, increased oxidative stress and inflammation markers in the blood, elevated antioxidant enzyme activity in the muscle and liver, and altered abundance of proteins and metabolites related to energy metabolism. The findings highlight the important role of muscle in how cattle respond to and recover from transportation stress.

Janina Gospodarek et al.

Summary: The presence of earthworms in soil contaminated with petroleum products accelerates decomposition, while the use of multiple animal species in soil remediation can speed up the process. However, long-term soil contamination may lead to different effects and the formation of toxic by-products. This study evaluated the impact of soil contamination with petroleum products on the life parameters of earthworms and found that breeding earthworms together with woodlice resulted in significant earthworm mortality, while woodlice showed greater resistance to the contaminants.
