Supported liquid extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites and their application for human biomonitoring

Fenfang Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of 11 hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OHPAHs) in urine samples from 226 volunteers in Guangzhou and assessed the associated health risks. The OHPAHs were detected in 100% of the urine samples, with naphthalene metabolites found at the highest concentrations (geometric mean of 8.61 μg/L). The total OHPAH level in male urine samples (13.2 μg/L) was significantly higher than that in female urine samples (5.84 μg/L). Overall, the estimated daily intake of PAHs posed a low health risk based on hazard quotients and hazard indexes.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the associations between 10 urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolites and thyroid profiles. The levels of 10 PAH metabolites and thyroid profiles were obtained from NHANES 2011-2012. Spearman analysis and regression models were used to assess the relationships between urinary PAH metabolite levels, thyroid hormones, and thyroid autoantibodies.

Interaction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposure and high-fasting plasma glucose on lung function decline in coke oven workers: a cross-lagged panel analysis

Lu Liu et al.

Summary: Individuals with abnormal fasting plasma glucose (FPG) may be more susceptible to lung diseases associated with environmental pollutants. A cross-sectional survey and panel study in China found that elevated levels of total hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (EOH-PAH) were associated with a decline in predicted forced vital capacity (FVC%) among high-FPG workers. FPG abnormalities were found to precede lung function decline induced by PAH exposure, and high-FPG and high EOH-PAH levels had an interactive effect on lung function decline.

Summary: In this study, the effects of BaP on thyroid development and function were tested using zebrafish as a model system. The results showed that exposure to BaP significantly affects thyroid function in zebrafish, with the primary toxic effects occurring at the hypothalamic-pituitary level, creating a model of central hypothyroidism.

Feng-Jiao Peng et al.

Summary: This study used hair analysis to assess the combined effects of 13 PAHs on steroid and thyroid hormones levels in a rat model. The results showed that PAH mixtures can interfere with steroid and thyroid hormone levels in female rats, and their effects are related to exposure intensity and hydroxylated PAHs concentrations.

Summary: Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may increase the risk of thyroid nodular goiter (NG)/papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), with a gender-specific effect observed. Elevated concentrations of specific OH-PAHs in NG and PTC patients are associated with increased disease risk.

Co-exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalates and their associations with oxidative stress damage in school children from South China

Yingxin Yu et al.

Summary: The study found variations in the concentrations of OH-PAHs and mPAEs in urine based on geographical location, and a positive correlation between 8-OHdG and these substances. OH-PAHs were found to contribute more to oxidative DNA damage when present alongside mPAFs. Risk assessment indicated that while risks from PAHs may be negligible, a significant percentage of school children may face health risks from PAEs, particularly diethylhexyl phthalate.

Variability in urinary biomarkers of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and its association with oxidative stress

Hongkai Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were widely present in urine, with significant inter-individual variability in some metabolites' concentrations, showing association with oxidative stress. Linear mixed-effects analysis revealed a positive correlation between OH-PAH concentrations and oxidative damage to DNA, lipids, and proteins.

Summary: This study aimed to determine thyroid volume (TV) in pediatric patients from the Aegean region of Turkey using ultrasound. The results indicated a significant positive correlation between TV and age, gender, height, weight, BMI, and body surface area. Age and weight were identified as the most important predictors for TV, with the findings closely matching data reported by the World Health Organisation in 2004.

Sandra F. Fernandez et al.

Summary: The study found a high detection rate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) metabolites in children living in the Valencian Region of Spain, with exposure levels affected by factors such as province of residence, BMI, age, consumption of plastic-wrapped food, and dietary habits. Risk assessment showed that children's daily intake levels were within safe limits, and no potential non-cancer health risks due to PAH exposure were observed.
