Effect of urbanization on extreme temperature events in Liaoning Province, China, from a spatiotemporal perspective

Zhentai Hu et al.

Summary: By analyzing the impact of urbanization on extreme temperature events in Liaoning Province, this study found that the influence of urbanization on extreme temperature events is complex and diverse, mainly reflected in the different degrees of impact of various indices, as well as the impact of the area and fragmentation of urban landscapes on extreme temperatures.

Optimal monitoring locations for identification of ambivalent characteristics of groundwater pollution sources

Anirban Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This article proposes a PCA-based methodology to design an efficient well network for identifying unknown characteristics of pollutant sources. In clandestine scenarios of groundwater pollution, where neither the location nor starting times of pollutant sources are known, an optimally designed pollutant data monitoring plan is needed to reduce time and cost of monitoring while achieving greater accuracy in source identification.

Lisbon urban heat island in future urban and climate scenarios

Rui Silva et al.

Summary: Urban heat islands are a potential hazard for urban populations, especially during heatwaves. Lisbon, a medium-size city, is frequently affected by high-temperature heatwaves. This study evaluates the urban heat island effect in Lisbon under future climate scenarios, finding that irrigation can mitigate the anthropogenic heat.

Lisbon urban heat island in future urban and climate scenarios

Rui Silva et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the changes of urban heat island (UHI) within Lisbon and finds that the urban heat island intensity (UHII) is expected to increase in the future century, mainly due to the introduction of urban land use land cover (LULC) with reduced green fraction during city consolidation.

Identification of Desakota Region and Urban Growth Analysis in Patna City, India Using Remote Sensing Data and GIS

Baddiuzaman Khan et al.

Summary: In India, the urban population is projected to reach 40% of the total population by 2030, posing challenges for planners in terms of sustainable infrastructure development and environmental issues. By utilizing image classification techniques on multi-temporal satellite images, this study investigated the peripheral growth of the megacity Patna in Bihar, India, revealing significant built-up areas in upland regions and increased vegetation due to agricultural practices. Desakota regions were identified mainly along major roads on the city's periphery.

Satellite imaging reveals increased proportion of population exposed to floods

B. Tellman et al.

Summary: Satellite imagery from 2000 to 2018 indicates that the proportion of global population exposed to floods is increasing, highlighting the importance of investing in flood adaptation strategies to reduce loss of life and livelihood. Changes in where and how floods occur, as well as the population exposed, are being influenced by urbanization, flood mitigation infrastructure, and settlements in floodplains. The high spatial and temporal resolution of satellite observations will enhance understanding of flood changes and adaptation methods.
