Soil chemical attributes in areas under conversion from forest to pasture in southern Brazilian Amazon

Alan Ferreira Leite de Lima et al.

Summary: The south of the Brazilian Amazon is a major cattle-producing region, but the low fertility of the soils has led to increased deforestation and burning as cattle breeders try to compensate for low pasture production. This has accelerated the chemical degradation of the Amazonian soils, making them increasingly infertile. The conversion of forest to pasture increased the pH and exchangeable bases levels of the soil, but also caused losses of phosphorus and organic carbon.

Forest-Fruticulture Conversion Alters Soil Traits and Soil Organic Matter Compartments

Bruna Firmino Enck et al.

Summary: Fruiticulture in the Amazonian Rainforest has negative effects on soil traits and soil organic matter fractions, leading to soil erosion and biodiversity loss. Therefore, it is important to consider fruticulture with endemic plant species to promote soil fertility and soil aggregation.

Soil attributes and root distribution in areas under forest conversion to cultivated environments in south Amazonas, Brazil

Alan Ferreira Leite de Lima et al.

Summary: This study evaluated soil attributes and root distribution in areas undergoing forest conversion to cultivated environments. The forest area and cultivated environments showed soil chemical limitations for agricultural production, with major changes and degradation in chemical attributes upon conversion. Major changes were observed in the 0.00 - 0.10 and 0.10 - 0.20 m layers in the studied areas.
