Potential risk of eutrophication in the deepest lake of Southwest China: Insights from phosphorus enrichment in bottom water

You-ai Duan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal variation and vertical distribution of phosphorus and related environmental variables in Fuxian Lake, a large deep lake in the Yunnan Plateau. The concentrations of total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus showed a linear increase with greater water depth, while pH and dissolved oxygen showed decreasing trends. The higher phosphorus concentrations in deeper water and sediment potentially pose a risk of future eutrophication in the lake.

Seasonal variations in surface processes and hydroclimate on an alpine lake, NE Tibetan Plateau

Bernd Wunnemann et al.

Summary: Koucha Lake in Qinghai Province provides an ideal location for studying seasonal hydroclimatic variations during the Holocene. By analyzing sediment cores from the lake, researchers used various proxies such as grain size measurements, ostracod associations, and geochemical parameters to reconstruct the hydroclimate. The study found that the lake has a low sedimentation rate and is essentially a closed system. The analysis of isotopic signatures from different waters on the Tibetan Plateau revealed the impact of summer evaporation on the isotopic composition of the lake sediments.

The impacts of whole-lake acidification and eutrophication on the accumulation of lead in sediments from manipulated lakes in the Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA)

Alexandre Baud et al.

Summary: Acidification and eutrophication are important stressors affecting water bodies globally. The influence of these stressors on metal accumulation in lake sediment is unclear. Through research and long-term monitoring, we found that eutrophication leads to higher lead accumulation in lake sediment, while acidification leads to lower lead accumulation.

Comparison of spatiotemporal carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus burial in two plateau lacustrine sediments: implication for N and P control

Xiaolei Wang et al.

Summary: The long-term accumulation, burial, and release of nutrients, such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in lacustrine sediments, play a key role in global lake eutrophication. Understanding the spatiotemporal sedimentary record of nutrients in lakes of different trophic levels helps in comprehending the evolution of water eutrophication. The study of sediment cores from two plateau lakes in southwestern China revealed higher concentrations and burial of C, N, and P in the sediments of a shallow hypertrophic lake compared to an oligotrophic deep lake, with implications for nutrient management strategies in preventing eutrophication.

Relative contributions of different sources to DOM in Erhai Lake as revealed by PLS-PM

Yu-quan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study used excitation emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) and partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) to investigate the migration and transformation mechanisms of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in freshwater lakes. The results revealed that phytoplankton and trophic state have significant impacts on DOM, while sediment and inflow rivers have less influence. Among the four fluorescent components identified by EEM-PARAFAC, the protein-like component is mainly affected by phytoplankton, while the humic-like components are sensitive to the trophic state.

Historical trends in atmospheric metal(loid) contamination in North China over the past half-millennium reconstructed from subalpine lake sediment

Mengyao Liang et al.

Summary: Trace metal (loid) contamination in the atmosphere in North China, a global contamination hotspot, has been monitored but there is a gap in understanding its long-term patterns. Historical trends of atmospheric contamination in North China over the past ~500 years were studied using sediment cores from two subalpine lakes. Mercury contamination has continuously increased since the late 1800s, while arsenic, lead, and cadmium contamination lagged behind in one lake compared to the other.

Contamination and eco-risk assessment of toxic trace elements in lakebed surface sediments of Lake Yangzong, southwestern China

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: Toxic trace elements pose an ongoing environmental problem in Lake Yangzong, with severe contamination of arsenic (As) in the southwestern part of the lake. Other toxic trace elements, such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb), are slightly to moderately enriched and decrease from the northwest to the southeast areas. The contamination is dominated by As and Pb, with the northern section and southwestern bay showing higher levels. Arsenic and Cd pose a high ecological risk, while Cu and Pb pose a low risk to biota. Statistical analyses suggest that metal contaminants originate from smelting of metal ores, leakage of tailings effluent, and coal consumption.

Spatio-temporal pattern of metal contamination in Chinese lakes since 1850

Mei Wang et al.

Summary: The study on metal contaminants in Chinese lakes from sediment records showed an overall increasing burial rate of MCs since 1850, with temporal patterns varying among regions due to different histories of human activities. Lakes in the Eastern Plain and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau had higher burial rates of MCs due to more intensive human activities, indicating that the history of human activities in lake catchments plays a significant role in spatial and temporal variations of metal contamination.
