Microbial methane emissions from the non-methanogenesis processes: A critical review

Lu-Yao Liu et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the microorganisms involved in the non-methanogenesis process and the possible mechanisms of methane production, including cyanobacteria, algae, fungi, and purple non-sulfur bacteria. These microbes produce methane by utilizing different carbon precursors, which is of significant importance to global methane emissions.

Anaerobic methane oxidation in a coastal oxygen minimum zone: spatial and temporal dynamics

Herdis G. R. Steinsdottir et al.

Summary: Coastal waters, especially anoxic zones, are a significant source of marine methane emissions. This study investigates the long-term dynamics and community composition of methanotrophs in the coastal oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica. The results show a stable redox zonation with high methane concentrations in anoxic bottom waters. Anaerobic methane oxidation activities were observed in the OMZ core, suggesting the potential contribution of Methylococcales clades (OPU3 and Deep Sea-1) in mitigating methane fluxes.

Methanethiol Consumption and Hydrogen Sulfide Production by the Thermoacidophilic Methanotroph Methylacidiphilum fumariolicum SolV

Rob A. Schmitz et al.

Summary: This study found that the degradation of methanethiol is a widespread detoxification mechanism in verrucomicrobial methanotrophs, which can consume methanethiol and produce H2S. The presence of genes encoding a putative methanethiol oxidase in various methanotrophs suggests that methanethiol degradation is a common process.

Sulfur and methane oxidation by a single microorganism

Joo-Han Gwak et al.

Summary: This study reports the isolation of a new aerobic methanotrophic bacterium capable of oxidizing both methane and reduced sulfur compounds for growth. Genomic and proteomic analyses revealed its metabolic pathways for methane and sulfur oxidation. The discovery of this versatile bacterium highlights the intimate interactions of methane and sulfur cycles in the oxic-anoxic interface environments.

Long-Term Warming of Baltic Sea Coastal Waters Affects Bacterial Communities in Bottom Water and Sediments Differently

Laura Seidel et al.

Summary: This study compared an unaffected Baltic Sea bay to a heated bay that has undergone artificial warming for ~50 years, and found that climate change is likely to alter microbial seasonality and diversity in coastal water, resulting in prolonged and increased algae blooming and elevated respiration rates.

Microbial ecology of sulfur cycling near the sulfate-methane transition of deep-sea cold seep sediments

Wen-Li Li et al.

Summary: The study identified a shallow sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ) in cold seep areas of the South China Sea and discovered a high diversity of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfur-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the cores sampled. SOB in the upper layers depended on nitrogen oxides and/or oxygen for sulfide oxidation, while SRB in the lower layers utilized the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway for CO2 fixation, sulfate reduction, and nitrogen fixation in a syntrophic or fermentative lifestyle.

Anthropogenic and Environmental Constraints on the Microbial Methane Cycle in Coastal Sediments

Anna J. Wallenius et al.

Summary: Large amounts of methane are produced by methanogenic archaea in anoxic sediments, with over 90% of it being oxidized via sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (S-AOM) in the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ). Coastal systems contribute to the majority of total marine methane emissions, and factors like eutrophication and climate change can influence methane emissions from these systems. Further studies are needed to understand the processes and microorganisms involved in methane cycling and to predict methane emissions accurately from coastal zones in the future.
