Measuring Structural Racism: A Guide for Epidemiologists and Other Health Researchers

Paris B. Adkins-Jackson et al.

Summary: Over 100 years of literature have discussed the deleterious influence of racism on health, focusing on how racism acts as a driver of social determinants of health. Attention has shifted towards measuring the structural nature of racism, rather than individual acknowledgment. There is still a need for methodological and analytical approaches to complement existing research.

Inequities in Drinking Water Quality Among Domestic Well Communities and Community Water Systems, California, 2011-2019

Clare Pace et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the relationship between sociodemographics and water contaminants in California domestic well areas and community water systems. It is found that poor water quality disproportionately impacts communities of color in the state.

On the Need to Revitalize Descriptive Epidemiology

Matthew P. Fox et al.

Summary: The importance of descriptive epidemiology in the curriculum is discussed in this article, with the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak serving as a motivating example. The limited training time devoted to descriptive epidemiology has led to the perception that causal epidemiology is more significant. However, descriptive epidemiology plays a crucial role in responding to public health crises, as illustrated by the current pandemic.

Nationwide geospatial analysis of county racial and ethnic composition and public drinking water arsenic and uranium

Irene Martinez-Morata et al.

Summary: Recent studies have identified sociodemographic and regional inequalities in concentrations of inorganic arsenic and uranium in public water systems across the US. Higher proportions of Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaskan Native residents are associated with significantly higher arsenic and uranium concentrations. In regions with higher concentrations, higher proportions of non-Hispanic Black residents are also associated with higher levels of these contaminants.

Blood Lead Levels in US Children Ages 1-11 Years, 1976-2016

Kathryn B. Egan et al.

Summary: Blood lead levels in U.S. children ages 1-11 y have substantially decreased over the past 40 years, but approximately 385,775 children still had BLLs greater than or equal to the CDC blood lead reference value of 5 μg/dL in the most recent period (2011-2016). Higher blood lead levels are consistently associated with risk factors such as non-Hispanic Black race/ethnicity, lower family income-to-poverty-ratio, and older housing age.

Associations of Community Water Lead Concentrations with Hemoglobin Concentrations and Erythropoietin-Stimulating Agent Use among Patients with Advanced CKD

John Danziger et al.

Summary: This study found that even low levels of lead exposure in community water systems throughout the United States are associated with lower hemoglobin levels and higher ESA use among patients with advanced kidney disease. Disparities in water lead levels and declines over time were also observed among Black versus White patients.
