The effect of working memory capacity and training on intertemporal decision making in children from low-socioeconomic-status families

Summary: Individuals differ in their tendency to discount delayed rewards. Low socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with strong delayed reward discounting (DRD). Working memory updating mediates the negative association between SES and DRD, and cognitive training can improve decision making in low-SES adolescents.

Altered genome-wide hippocampal gene expression profiles following early life lead exposure and their potential for reversal by environmental enrichment

Summary: Early life lead exposure can negatively affect neurobehavioral development, but the quality of the environment can modify these effects. Our study found that an enriched environment can reverse the changes in gene expression caused by lead exposure and improve memory impairments. These results highlight the importance of the environment in modulating the effects of lead exposure and the need for early intervention and environmental enrichment for lead-exposed children.

Blood Lead Levels in US Children Ages 1-11 Years, 1976-2016

Summary: Blood lead levels in U.S. children ages 1-11 y have substantially decreased over the past 40 years, but approximately 385,775 children still had BLLs greater than or equal to the CDC blood lead reference value of 5 μg/dL in the most recent period (2011-2016). Higher blood lead levels are consistently associated with risk factors such as non-Hispanic Black race/ethnicity, lower family income-to-poverty-ratio, and older housing age.

Associations of family income with cognition and brain structure in USA children: prevention implications

Summary: In this study, family income was found to be the most explanatory SES factor for individual differences in cognitive test scores, cortical volume, and thickness in children brain development. Parental education and neighborhood deprivation showed negligible effects on cognition and brain morphometrics when controlling for family income. Cognitive scores partially mediated the association of family income and cortical thickness in children.
