Inter-estuarine and seasonal to decadal variations of heavy metal pollution in the Gulf of Cambay, India

Abul Qasim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the metal pollution status in the Gulf of Cambay, a major food hub in India, by analyzing the seasonal abundances of various heavy metals in suspended sediments. The results indicate that the suspended sediments generally exhibit low pollution levels, but there are moderate to high pollution hotspots in certain areas and seasons. The comparison with previous studies suggests that suspended sediments efficiently capture active metal pollution in Indian estuaries. Additionally, there has been a recent decline in estuarine metal pollution, which may be attributed to increased organic matter supplies from urban sewage discharge and the trapping of contaminated riverine sediments upstream of large dam reservoirs.

Historical trends in atmospheric metal(loid) contamination in North China over the past half-millennium reconstructed from subalpine lake sediment

Mengyao Liang et al.

Summary: Trace metal (loid) contamination in the atmosphere in North China, a global contamination hotspot, has been monitored but there is a gap in understanding its long-term patterns. Historical trends of atmospheric contamination in North China over the past ~500 years were studied using sediment cores from two subalpine lakes. Mercury contamination has continuously increased since the late 1800s, while arsenic, lead, and cadmium contamination lagged behind in one lake compared to the other.

Record of heavy metals in Huguangyan Maar Lake sediments: Response to anthropogenic atmospheric pollution in Southern China

Hongchen Wu et al.

Summary: The historical atmospheric heavy metal pollution in southern China over the past 200 years was studied using analysis of a sediment core from Huguangyan Maar Lake. The study found that Zn, Cd, Sb, Tl, and Pb in the lake were closely related to human activities, while Cr and Ni were mainly from the weathering of surrounding basalt. The increase of atmospheric Pb in southern China occurred earlier than in other regions of China, mainly due to war and the use of leaded gasoline. After 2000, atmospheric Pb continued to rise due to continued industrial development.

Rare-Earth Elements and Heavy Metals in Atmospheric Particulate Matter in an Urban Area

Shahadev Rabha et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the characteristics of atmospheric PM10, including the source apportionment of rare-earth elements (REEs) and heavy metals, using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Although the concentrations of PM10 are close to the limit, the concentrations of heavy metals are within the prescribed levels by the World Health Organization (WHO). PMF modeling revealed the contributions of five significant sources in the urban area.

Heavy metals in lake surface sediments in protected areas in Poland: concentration, pollution, ecological risk, sources and spatial distribution

Mariusz Sojka et al.

Summary: This paper presents the state and spatial distribution of surface sediment contamination by Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu in 77 lakes in Poland. The results indicate the contamination of lake sediments by heavy metals, but the potentially toxic effects are only found in single lakes. The spatial distribution of different metals varies, with Cr predominantly impacted by point sources and Pb, Ni, and Zn impacted by non-point sources. The analysis also reveals the presence of high concentration hot spots in the western part of Poland and low concentration cold spots in the central part. The presence of wetlands and higher proportions of national parks and nature reserves are found to limit the inflow of heavy metals into lakes.

Heavy Metals and Pesticides Toxicity in Agricultural Soil and Plants: Ecological Risks and Human Health Implications

Ahmed Alengebawy et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the toxic effects of heavy metals and pesticides on the agricultural ecosystem and human health, including accumulation, mechanism of action, and transmission pathways. The impact on soil and plants, as well as related diseases, were discussed. Additionally, the synergistic and antagonistic interactions between heavy metals and pesticides and their combined toxic effects were examined.

Metals in coarse ambient aerosol as markers for source apportionment and their health risk assessment over an eastern coastal urban atmosphere in India

Upasana Panda et al.

Summary: The study revealed seasonal variations in PM10 concentrations in Bhubaneswar, India, with higher elemental concentrations observed during the winter season. The metallic components in PM10 mainly originate from local and regional emission sources, with low carcinogenic risks associated with most elements. However, long-term exposure to heavy metals through ingestion pathways can potentially harm human health, especially in children.

Temporal and spatial distributions and sources of heavy metals in atmospheric deposition in western Taihu Lake, China

Yan Li et al.

Summary: Heavy metals in atmospheric dust can pollute soil, water, and sediment, posing a threat to human health. This study focused on the temporal and spatial distribution of heavy metals in atmospheric deposition in western Taihu Lake. Results showed that heavy metal concentrations were higher in winter, lower in summer, and correlated with distance from the city. The health risk assessment values were higher in winter and spring, especially near the city and in suburbs.

Concentrations, transport characteristics, and health risks of PM2.5-bound trace elements over a national park in central India

Jayant Nirmalkar et al.

Summary: In this study, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass and its chemical constituents were measured over Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal, central India. The study examined the temporal behaviour, dry deposition fluxes, and transport pathways of elements, in addition to their health risks. The results showed a pronounced seasonality for major elements and reconstructed soil, with winter and post-monsoon season highs, potentially due to source strengths and favourable meteorology during these seasons.
