Pyrites in a salt marsh-ria system: Quantification, morphology, and mobilization

X. L. Otero et al.

Summary: Galician Rias are highly productive ecosystems with salt marshes and sediments that promote pyrite synthesis and accumulation. This study examines the morphological variability and concentration of pyrites in the Ria de Ortigueira, finding that framboidal pyrites dominate in marsh soils and sediments in the inner and middle sections, while isolated crystals dominate in the outer section. Lower marsh soils show the highest pyrite synthesis, but lower amounts of framboidal pyrites compared to the inner and middle sections. Pyrite crystals in the sediments indicate degradation and derive from marsh collapse.

Dynamics, distribution, and transformations of mercury species from pyrenean high-altitude lakes

Bastien Duval et al.

Summary: The cycling of mercury in remote alpine lakes, which are sensitive ecosystems, involves methylation and bio-magnification pathways. A study conducted in the Western/Central Pyrenees analyzed the speciation and variations of mercury in pristine lakes at high altitudes. The findings suggest that environmental changes, such as global warming and potential eutrophication, can significantly affect the turnover of mercury and the burden of methylmercury in these remote ecosystems.

Organic Phosphorus Mineralization Dominates the Release of Internal Phosphorus in a Macrophyte-Dominated Eutrophication Lake

Wei Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the release dynamics of phosphorus (P) in the sediments of Lake Caohai, a macrophyte-dominated eutrophication (MDE) lake in southwest of China. The results showed that organic P played a critical role in the internal P loading of the lake, while inorganic P contributed less to the internal P release. Additionally, organic P in sediments could transfer to P-combination Fe-Al/Fe-Mn, but in severely expropriated environments, the enrichment of P-combination Fe-Al/Fe-Mn inhibited the mineralization of monophosphate.

Evaluation of long-term phosphorus uptake by Schoenoplectus californicus and Phragmites australis plants in pilot-scale constructed wetlands

Valentina Carrillo et al.

Summary: The study evaluated long-term phosphorus retention efficiency in a pilot-scale constructed wetland system over nearly 8 years. Both Schoenoplectus californicus and Phragmites australis showed significant phosphorus removal efficiency, with factors such as phosphorus loading rate, hydraulic loading rate, and dissolved oxygen being correlated with long-term retention. Plant uptake of phosphorus increased with operational years, with warmer seasons showing higher efficiency in phosphorus uptake.

The Rapid Effects of Yellow-Legged Gull (Larus michahellis) Colony on Dune Habitats and Plant Landscape in the Atlantic Islands National Park (NW Spain)

Saul De La Pena-Lastra et al.

Summary: The Atlantic Islands of Galicia Maritime/Terrestrial National Park is home to one of the largest breeding colonies of yellow-legged gulls in the world. This study assesses the impact of a new yellow-legged gull breeding colony on two habitats of community interest: white dunes and grey dunes. The results show significant changes in soil properties and vegetation cover in plots with higher gull densities.

Shifting states, shifting services: Linking regime shifts to changes in ecosystem services of shallow lakes

Annette B. G. Janssen et al.

Summary: Shallow lakes can transition between stable states due to anthropogenic or natural factors, impacting the ecosystem services they provide. Different dominant groups of primary producers in these states determine the types of services supplied. The identified ecosystem services in shallow lakes are linked to various Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting the importance of considering trade-offs in conserving and restoring these ecosystems for the natural value they bring.

Analysis of the levels of metal(loid)s in environmental compartments in Ireland towards a screening measure for potential relative risk using open-source datasets

Rajat Nag et al.

Summary: The study assessed the pollution levels of 16 metals and metalloids in the environment of Ireland, finding that in some locations, the concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soil exceeded threshold values. Risk values for water and sediment samples did not exceed the thresholds. Overall, there is a higher potential relative risk in the East coast region of Ireland.

Phosphorus supply pathways and mechanisms in shallow lakes with different regime

Hui Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the pathways and mechanisms of phosphorus supply vary in different water regimes, being influenced by factors such as dominance of algae or macrophytes, exogenous P input, and the role of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria.

Phenological shifts in lake stratification under climate change

R. Iestyn Woolway et al.

Summary: The study found that under high-greenhouse-gas-emission scenario, lake stratification will start 22.0 +/- 7.0 days earlier and end 11.3 +/- 4.7 days later by the end of this century. This 33.3 +/- 11.7 day prolongation in stratification will likely accelerate lake deoxygenation and impact nutrient mineralization and phosphorus release.

Evidence of a rapid phosphorus-induced regime shift in a large deep reservoir

Seyoum Yami Gebremariam et al.

Summary: This study applies regime shift theory to Diamond Valley Lake (DVL) in California, one of the newest and deepest reservoirs, revealing a rapid departure from previous water quality conditions. The critical stressor, phosphorus, was identified along with the load threshold that led to a shift to a hypoxic, phytoplankton-dominated system. In large deep systems like DVL, morphometric features and external stressors play crucial roles in driving regime shifts, with inherent factors such as wind conditions and stable stratification contributing to the susceptibility to hypoxia and accelerating regime shift.
