High production of flavonols and anthocyanins in Eruca sativa (Mill) Thell plants at high artificial LED light intensities

G. N. Veremeichik et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that red/blue light resulted in a 20-fold increase in flavonol productivity in arugula plants compared to white light. However, it had no effect on anthocyanin productivity. On the other hand, red/blue light increased the anthocyanin content and productivity of arugula plants more than ten times compared to white light. Overall, this research demonstrates that flavonoid content can be significantly increased without a loss in biomass.

Effect of a suitable treatment period on the genetic transformation efficiency of the plant leaf disc method

Yufei Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the cell developmental stages and genetic transformation efficiency in different explants of hybrid poplar (Populus alba x Populus glandulosa, 84 K) leaves, stem segments, and tobacco leaves. The highest genetic transformation rates for poplar and tobacco leaves were observed on the 3rd and 2nd day of culture, reaching 86.6% and 57.3%, respectively. The highest genetic transformation rate for poplar stem segments was on the 4th day of culture, reaching 77.8%. By using indicators such as flow cytometry, cell cycle-related protein expression, and morphological changes of explants, the appropriate treatment period for genetic transformation was determined, improving the efficiency and stability of plant leaf disc genetic transformation.

Suppression of ZEAXANTHIN EPOXIDASE 1 restricts stripe rust growth in wheat

Chao-Yan Chang et al.

Summary: Reducing losses caused by pathogens is an effective strategy for stabilizing crop yields. This study found that suppressing wheat zeaxanthin epoxidase 1 (ZEP1) can enhance wheat defense against stripe rust. Additionally, the study revealed that wheat kinase START 1.1 (WKS1.1, Yr36) can also suppress the activity of ZEP1, which opens up possibilities for stacking wheat ZEP1 variants with other known resistance genes in future breeding programs.

Enhanced function of non-photoinhibited photosystem II complexes upon PSII photoinhibition

Sanna Gunell et al.

Summary: Light-induced photosystem II photoinhibition causes inactivation and irreversible damage to the reaction center protein(s), but the light harvesting complexes continue to collect light energy. This study investigates the consequences of such photoinhibition on thylakoid light harvesting and electron transfer reactions in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. The results show that without blocking the repair of damaged photosystem II centers, photoinhibition increases the excitation of photosystem II relative to photosystem I, while blocking repair leads to increased excitation of photosystem I and strong oxidation of the electron transfer chain. It is hypothesized that dynamic regulation of the LHCII system plays a crucial role in controlling excitation energy transfer during photosystem II damage and repair to maintain efficient and safe photosynthesis.

Transcriptome and co-expression network analyses provide insights into fruit shading that enhances carotenoid accumulation in pomelo ( Citrus grandis )

Qihang Jiang et al.

Summary: Bagging treatment enhances the accumulation of carotenoids, especially lycopene, in the pulp of pomelo fruit. Upregulation of PSY and downregulation of CCD1 gene expression directly contribute to the increase in carotenoid content. Thirteen candidate genes closely associated with lycopene accumulation were identified through RNA-seq and WGCNA analysis, and their regulatory mechanism on carotenoid pathway genes was discussed. Additionally, these candidate genes may indirectly influence carotenoid enhancement in the pulp through the regulation of phytohormones, primary metabolism, and stress responses.

Ketocarotenoids accumulation in the leaves of engineered Brassica napus restricts photosynthetic efficiency and plant growth

Jie-Lin Wang et al.

Summary: Overexpression of four genes involved in astaxanthin biosynthesis in Brassica napus resulted in the accumulation of nonnative ketocarotenoids, decreased levels of chlorophylls and other carotenoids, and ultimately led to slower growth and decreased biomass production in the transgenic plants. The reduced photosynthetic efficiency caused by the altered carotenoid levels negatively impacted plant growth in B. napus.
