Assessing Heat Tolerance in Creeping Bentgrass Lines Based on Physiological Responses

Qianqian Fan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess heat tolerance in different experimental lines and cultivars of cool-season creeping bentgrass, and determine important physiological and biochemical traits for improved tolerance, including the use of OJIP fluorescence. The results showed that OJIP fluorescence could be used as a valuable tool for dissecting photosynthetic processes and identifying critical steps responsible for photosynthetic declines, enabling more targeted heat-stress screening.

Variation in thermotolerance of photosystem II energy trapping, intersystem electron transport, and photosystem I electron acceptor reduction for diverse cotton genotypes

Navneet Kaur et al.

Summary: Cotton breeding programs need to select for tolerance to high temperature extremes to prevent environment-induced yield loss. Methods that combine chlorophyll fluorescence induction measurements with temperature response experiments can be used to identify genotypic variation in photosynthetic thermotolerance. Cotton genotypes differ significantly in photosynthetic thermotolerance, and different photosynthetic processes have varying sensitivities to high temperature, with intersystem electron transport being the most heat sensitive.

Study of high temperature stress induced damage and recovery in photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI) in Spinach leaves (Spinacia oleracia)

Divya Agrawal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism by which plants dissipate excess photon energy during high temperature stress by measuring electron transfer rates, redox state, and recovery capacity of PS II and PS I. Results showed sensitivity of PS II to initial heat treatment time at 40 degrees C, with impact on energy dissipation and quantum yield. PS I stability decreased with increasing heat treatment time, while cyclic electron flow played a role in protecting PS I from over-reduction under heat stress. Recovery of both PS II and PS I was observed in dark and light conditions, with partial recovery in 10 minutes and slight recovery in 20 minutes.

Extreme temperatures affect seedling growth and photosynthetic performance of advanced cotton genotypes

Gurpreet Virk et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of temperature on cotton seedling growth, with the 35/25°C regime showing the highest growth parameter values and significant differences in growth observed among genotypes. Photosynthetic parameters were significantly correlated with growth metrics, with phi EO (intersystem electron transport) showing the strongest associations with growth performance.

A standardised approach for determining heat tolerance in cotton using triphenyl tetrazolium chloride

Susan Y. Jaconis et al.

Summary: The study focused on improving the efficiency and reliability of a heat stress assay (HSA) based on TTC enzyme viability testing for quantifying thermotolerant phenotypes in cotton breeding programs. Optimal sampling regimes were identified, enabling measurement of large populations for application in breeding programs, with the potential for long-term improvements in cotton thermotolerance. Additionally, a new method for interpreting both heat tolerance and heat resistance was developed.
