A meta-analysis of responses of C3 plants to atmospheric CO2: dose-response curves for 85 traits ranging from the molecular to the whole-plant level

Changes in drought characteristics based on rainfall pattern drought index and the CMIP6 multi-model ensemble

Summary: Drought monitoring and understanding of spatiotemporal patterns of drought characteristics are crucial for sustainable agricultural water management. This study proposes a bivariate copula-based multi-scalar rainfall pattern drought index (RPDI) and analyzes the drought characteristics in India using RPDI and SPI at different time scales. The results show potential changes in drought severity and number of drought events, as well as increasing maximum drought duration and severity in the future. Therefore, the RPDI drought monitoring framework is recommended for efficient agricultural water management.

Spatiotemporal patterns of water consumption and irrigation requirements of wheat-maize in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, China and options of their reduction

Summary: Severe water shortages in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain pose a threat to agricultural sustainability. This study examined the spatiotemporal variations in crop water consumption and irrigation water requirements in the region, as well as tested alternative cropping systems that may require less irrigation. The results showed that there was no significant change in annual evapotranspiration, but it decreased from southeast to northwest. The irrigation water requirements varied across seasons and regions, with the north requiring more irrigation during the winter wheat season. Different cropping systems had varying average irrigation water requirements, ranging from 211 mm to 344 mm.
