The transcription factor GmbHLH3 confers Cl-/salt tolerance to soybean by upregulating GmCLC1 expression for maintenance of anion homeostasis

Xun Liu et al.

Summary: A novel bHLH transcription factor, GmbHLH3, was found to enhance soybean and Arabidopsis tolerance to Cl-/salt stress by up-regulating the expression of the GmCLC1 gene. GmbHLH3 localizes to the nucleus and can bind to the G-box at position 550 of the GmCLC1 promoter. GmbHLH3-overexpressed plants displayed improved growth phenotype and accumulated more Cl- and NO3- in the roots to restrict transport to shoots, thus maintaining a lower Cl-/NO3- ratio in the whole plant.

Abiotic stress responses in plants

Huiming Zhang et al.

Summary: Plants face abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, which greatly impact their distribution, growth, and crop productivity. Recent research has revealed the complex molecular mechanisms involved in plants' responses to these stresses, including sensing, signaling, transcription, translation, and post-translational modifications. This knowledge can be utilized to enhance crop resilience and sustainability through genetic, chemical, and microbial approaches.

Molecular Cloning and Characterization of SaCLCd, SaCLCf, and SaCLCg, Novel Proteins of the Chloride Channel Family (CLC) from the Halophyte Suaeda altissima (L.) Pall

Olga I. Nedelyaeva et al.

Summary: In this study, the coding sequences of the CLC family genes SaCLCd, SaCLCf, and SaCLCg were cloned from the euhalophyte Suaeda altissima. The protein sequences of SaCLCd, SaCLCf, and SaCLCg showed the key conserved motifs and glutamates of the CLC family. Different ion specificities were observed for these proteins, with SaCLCd acting as a Cl-/H+ antiporter and SaCLCf and SaCLCg acting as Cl- channels. The expression of these genes in response to salinity stress in S. altissima suggests their involvement in salt tolerance mechanisms.

Genome-Wide Identification and Functional Characterization of the Chloride Channel TaCLC Gene Family in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Peijun Mao et al.

Summary: In this study, the TaCLC gene family of wheat was screened and analyzed. It was found that the expression levels of these genes were up-regulated under low nitrogen stress and salt stress conditions, except for the TaCLC-c2 cluster genes. Furthermore, some TaCLC genes were found to have anion transport functions in yeast. This study provides a preliminary reference for better understanding nitrate nitrogen transportation in wheat.

Overexpression of GsCNGC20-f from Glycine soja confers submergence tolerance to hairy-root composite soybean plants and Arabidopsis seedlings by enhancing anaerobic respiration

Xiaojiang Li et al.

Summary: Cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (CNGCs) in plants play a crucial role in the physiological regulation of plant responses to adverse environments. This study investigates the submergence tolerance of soybean seedlings and identifies potential genes involved in the submergence response. The results suggest that GsCNGC20-f is a key gene associated with calcium ion binding and voltage-gated potassium channel activity, which contributes to the adaptation and survival of soybean seedlings under submergence stress. Further functional studies demonstrate that overexpression of GsCNGC20-f can alleviate submergence injury by regulating Ca2+ content, anaerobic metabolism, and energy reserves.

Is chloride toxic to seed germination in mixed-salt environments? A case study with the coastal halophyte Suaeda maritima in the presence of seawater

Charlotte E. Seal et al.

Summary: Seed germination is negatively affected by increasing concentrations of chloride and sodium ions, with thresholds for maximum germination at 1381 mM for Cl and 1262 mM for Na. Exposure to salt ions can promote germination, but ion toxicity, particularly from chloride, is the major limitation in mixed-salt environments like seawater.

Early ABA-stimulated maintenance of Cl- homeostasis by mepiquat chloride priming confers salt tolerance in cotton seeds

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: MC priming enhances salt tolerance during seed germination in cotton by improving seed vigor, germination rates, and Cl- exclusion ability. ABA plays a crucial role in regulating Cl- homeostasis through modulation of Cl- transporters, thereby contributing to salt tolerance.
