PM2.5-bound phthalates and phthalate substitutes in a megacity of southern China: spatioseasonal variations, source apportionment, and risk assessment

Yu-Qi Huang et al.

Summary: This research investigated the spatioseasonal variations and sources of particle-bound phthalates (PAEs) and their substitutes (APs) in a megacity in South China. The results showed significant spatial and seasonal variations in plasticizer concentrations, with main sources identified as plastics, personal care products, solvents, and the polyester industry.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 from an e-waste source site and a receptor site in Southern China: Atmospheric transport and process implications

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of PAHs in PM2.5 at rural e-waste recycling sites and background locations in Southern China, revealing that informal e-waste dismantling is a significant source of PAHs. Seasonal variations showed higher concentrations in winter, associated with intensified e-waste dismantling activities, with potential markers identified for field informal e-waste burning sources.

Benzo[a]pyrene-Environmental Occurrence, Human Exposure, and Mechanisms of Toxicity

Bozena Bukowska et al.

Summary: Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is commonly found in the environment and human surroundings. It has been shown to have toxic effects on DNA, reproduction, neurology, and development. The metabolism of B[a]P is mediated by cytochrome P450 (CYP P450) and its polymorphism determines the sensitivity to B[a]P. Additionally, B[a]P may facilitate the replication of viruses.

Particle size-resolved emission characteristics of complex polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) mixtures from various combustion sources

Yu -Ping Chen et al.

Summary: Combustion of domestic solid fuels is a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study investigates the size-dependent emissions of different types of PAHs from various combustion sources. Biomass burning is found to be the most significant source of PAH emissions. The study also highlights the importance of considering size-resolved atmospheric behaviors and fate of PAHs after their emission.

Characterization of organic aerosols in PM1 and their cytotoxicity in an urban roadside area in Hong Kong

Xinyi Niu et al.

Summary: This study found that organic compounds emitted from traffic and cooking are the main components of aerosols in urban areas, contributing to oxidative stress and inflammation. Cell tests revealed the critical role of organic compounds in cytotoxicity, affecting lactate dehydrogenase, reactive oxygen species, and interleukin-6 levels. Variations in organic groups showed that traffic and cooking emissions were dominant pollution sources.

Inhalation bioaccessibility, health risk assessment, and source appointment of ambient PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Caofeidian, China

Hao Zeng et al.

Summary: The study identified four potential sources of PM2.5-bound PAH(18) as industrial emissions (44%), petroleum volatilization (30%), vehicle emissions (15%), and coal combustion (11%). The average inhalation bioaccessibility of PAHs ranged from 17.8% (dibenzo [a,h] anthracene) to 67.9% (fluorene). The ILCR values indicated that children and teenagers had lower cancer risks from inhalation of PAHs during all seasons, while adults exceeded the acceptable threshold in winter. Source identification and bioaccessibility evaluations are crucial for accurately assessing the health risks of PM2.5-bound PAHs.

The impacts of long-term exposure to PM2.5 on cancer hospitalizations in Brazil

Pei Yu et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 in Brazil was found to be positively associated with cancer hospitalizations, with a 1.04 relative risk increase for every 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration. The study estimated that 33.82% of total cancer hospitalizations in Brazil could be attributed to PM2.5 exposure, leading to significant inpatient days and costs. Reducing PM2.5 exposure could potentially save on hospitalization days and costs.
