Insights into the circadian rhythm alterations of the novel PFOS substitutes F-53B and OBS on adult zebrafish

Qiyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neurotoxicity and underlying mechanisms of PFOS alternatives, F-53B and OBS, on adult zebrafish's circadian rhythms. The results showed that PFOS affected heat response rather than circadian rhythms by disrupting calcium signaling pathway transduction, while F-53B and OBS altered circadian rhythms through different mechanisms. F-53B interfered with neurotransmitter metabolism and disrupted blood-brain barrier formation, while OBS inhibited Wnt signaling transduction and induced midbrain ventriculomegaly, leading to imbalance in DA secretion and circadian rhythm changes. This study emphasizes the importance of assessing the environmental exposure risks of PFOS alternatives and understanding their multiple toxicities' mechanisms.

Maternal transfer of F-53B inhibited neurobehavior in zebrafish offspring larvae and potential mechanisms: Dopaminergic dysfunction, eye development defects and disrupted calcium homeostasis

Luyin Wu et al.

Summary: Maternal exposure to chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acids (ClPFESAs) was found to have an impact on behavioral changes in offspring zebrafish. This was demonstrated by reduced swimming speed and distance travelled in the larvae. Molecular docking analysis revealed that ClPFESAs can interact with various proteins involved in brain function and calcium regulation. The study also showed that ClPFESAs can disrupt dopaminergic function, eye development, and calcium homeostasis in zebrafish offspring.

Significant Reductive Transformation of 6:2 Chlorinated Polyfluorooctane Ether Sulfonate to Form Hydrogen-Substituted Polyfluorooctane Ether Sulfonate and Their Toxicokinetics in Male Sprague-Dawley Rats

Shujun Yi et al.

Summary: The study found that 6:2 Cl-PFESA transformed into 6:2 H-PFESA as the sole metabolite in rat liver, with a reductive enzyme-dependent pathway. 6:2 H-PFESA was more prone to cumulative urinary excretion, suggesting a detoxification mechanism for organisms. The toxicokinetic properties of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and 6:2 H-PFESA were structure and dose dependent in blood and urine.

Emerging and legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in house dust from South China: Contamination status and human exposure assessment

Fangping Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that PFAS concentrations in house dust from Guangzhou were relatively high compared to other regions, exhibiting a specific composition pattern. Renovation history was identified as a significant factor influencing PFAS concentrations, with low exposure risks mainly from dust ingestion and dermal contact. Nevertheless, the potential risks from indoor PFAS exposure, including chemical-specific effects and mixture effects, should not be underestimated.

The occurrence of PFAS in human placenta and their binding abilities to human serum albumin and organic anion transporter 4

Yao Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of both legacy and emerging PFAS in human placenta, revealing different concentrations and detection frequencies of various PFAS. Molecular docking calculations showed that the binding affinities of PFAS with proteins are correlated with chain length, indicating a close relationship between placental transfer of PFAS and chain length.

Alteration of neuro-dopamine and steroid hormone homeostasis in wild Bank voles in relation to tissue concentrations of PFAS at a Nordic skiing area

Randi Gronnestad et al.

Summary: PEAS may alter neuro-dopamine and steroid hormone homeostasis in Bank voles from a skiing area in Norway, potentially affecting reproduction and general health. The study found a positive association between brain dopamine concentrations and several PFAS, as well as a negative association between PFAS and dopamine receptor 1 mRNA. Additionally, PFAS were found to affect dopamine metabolism and testosterone concentrations in the voles.
