Epigenome-wide analysis of maternal exposure to green space during gestation and cord blood DNA methylation in the ENVIRONAGE cohort

Rossella Alfano et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-epigenome-wide association study on maternal exposure to green space during gestation and cord blood DNA methylation in newborns. The results showed that maternal exposure to green space during pregnancy is associated with cord blood DNA methylation, mainly at loci organized in genes playing important roles in neurological development.

Adverse Effects of fine particulate matter on human kidney functioning: a systematic review

Leen Rasking et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the relevant knowledge on the effects of ambient PM2.5 on kidney function in adults. Most studies showed that PM2.5 exposure worsened kidney outcomes, but contradictory results were also found. The included studies have limitations, and further investigations are needed to determine the extent of PM2.5's adverse effects on the kidney.

Association between airborne particulate matter and renal function: An analysis of 2.5 million young adults

Qin Li et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to PM1 and PM2.5 was associated with reduced renal function among young Han Chinese, with females showing higher associations than males. Participants who worked as farmers, were of normal weight, were not exposed to tobacco smoking, and did not drink alcohol had higher associations between eGFR and PM compared to their counterparts.

Associations between air pollutant exposure and renal function: A prospective study of older adults without chronic kidney disease

Ang Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized real-world exposure scenarios to examine the impact of six ambient air pollutants on renal function in older adults without chronic kidney disease, revealing a significant association between NO2 exposure and eGFR reduction. Furthermore, NO2 exposure remained robust in a two-pollutant model, suggesting a strong link between NO2 exposure and renal impairment.

Association of Ambient Fine Particulate Matter Air Pollution With Kidney Transplant Outcomes

Su-Hsin Chang et al.

Summary: This cohort study found that exposure to increased levels of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution is associated with increased risks of adverse posttransplant outcomes among patients with kidney transplants, including acute rejection, graft failure, and death. These findings suggest that efforts to reduce PM2.5 levels may lead to improved outcomes after kidney transplants.

Renal impairment assessment on adults living nearby a landfill: Early kidney dysfunction biomarkers linked to the environmental exposure to heavy metals

Mathilde Cabral et al.

Summary: This study found that subjects exposed to landfill emissions had glomerular dysfunction and tubule damage, as specific biomarkers appeared in the urine. Blood levels of Pb and urine levels of Cd were positively correlated with multiple biomarkers of kidney injury. The relationship between Cd/Pb exposure biomarkers and early effect biomarkers predicted a future risk of severe kidney injury in subjects living near the landfill.
