Elite-driven surrogate-assisted CMA-ES algorithm by improved lower confidence bound method

Zengcong Li et al.

Summary: A novel elite-driven surrogate-assisted Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (ES-CMA-ES) algorithm based on the improved Lower Confidence Bound (ILCB) method is proposed in this paper to relieve computational burden and improve global optimizing ability. By introducing step size to control the uncertainty term of the ILCB formula adaptively, along with an efficient pre-screening strategy and a competitive chaotic operator for model management, ES-CMA-ES achieves efficient candidate point sampling, optimization convergence acceleration, and avoidance of local optima trapping. The proposed algorithm shows outstanding efficiency, global optimizing ability, and applicability compared to other black-box optimization algorithms.

Shape optimization method for axisymmetric disks based on mesh deformation and smoothing approaches

Lei Huang et al.

Summary: This article proposes a shape optimization method for axisymmetric disks based on radial basis function (RBF) mesh deformation and Laplace smoothing approaches. The method uses a greedy algorithm to obtain an optimized reduced control point selection of mesh deformation under the influence of the design space. RBF mesh deformation is used to change the axisymmetric contour shape, and Laplace smoothing is employed to monitor and improve the local mesh quality. The proposed method is validated through two examples in aero-engines, demonstrating its significant potential in reducing the maximum equivalent stress of axisymmetric disks.

Simultaneous shape and topology optimization of wings

Lukas C. Hoghoj et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for simultaneous optimization of the outer shape and internal topology of aircraft wings, with the objective of minimizing drag subject to lift and compliance constraints for multiple load cases. The physics are evaluated by the means of a source-doublet panel method for the aerodynamic response and linear elastic finite elements for the structural response, which are one-way coupled. Wings of small fixed-wing airplanes both with and without a stiffening strut are optimized. The resulting wings show internal topologies with struts and wall-truss combinations, depending on the design freedom of the shape optimization. The lift distributions of the optimized wings show patterns like the ones obtained when performing optimization of wing shapes with constraints on the bending moment at the root.

An explicit approach for simultaneous shape and topology optimization of shell structures

Xudong Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the simultaneous shape and topology optimization of shell structures using the Moving Morphable Component (MMC) approach. Unlike traditional implicit optimization methods, the proposed method is developed in a pure explicit way, which is beneficial for optimizing shell structures with complex geometry. By representing the geometric shape and topological form of the shell using Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) in physical space and a series of components in parametric space, the topology and shape of the shell can be optimized simultaneously with fewer design variables, and the results can be seamlessly integrated with CAD systems. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Adaptive step-size numerical vibration correlation technique for buckling prediction of thin-walled shells under axial compression and thermal loads

Lei Huang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a numerical prediction method for buckling loads in shell structures under axial compression and thermal loads based on vibration correlation technique (VCT). The method, named numerical VCT (NVCT), is a non-destructive test method that can be realized numerically. The paper presents the derivation of the VCT formula for thin-walled structures and introduces an adaptive step-size NVCT (AS-NVCT) calculation scheme based on an adaptive increment control strategy. The findings demonstrate that AS-NVCT achieves accurate buckling prediction results and higher efficiency compared to typical numerical buckling methods.
