Influence of vertical seismic component on the response of reinforced concrete regular planar frames

Antonios Skoufezis et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the vertical seismic component on the response of reinforced concrete regular planar frames. The study demonstrates that the role of the vertical ground motion is quite underestimated by modern seismic codes.

OpenSeesPyView: Python programming-based visualization and post-processing tool for OpenSeesPy

Junjun Guo et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a newly developed visualization framework, OpenSeesPyView, which is a Python programming-based graphical user interface (GUI) for the popular finite element solver OpenSeesPy in earthquake engineering. OpenSeesPyView is weakly connected with OpenSeesPy through a model database, allowing users to have more coding freedom. Users prepare the associated data using wrapper methods to construct the numerical model in OpenSeesPy, which can be saved in the model database. The developed tool reads the data from the database and visualizes the model, mode shapes, time history responses, etc. Moreover, it is convenient to modify and add codes to the proposed visualization framework.

New insights into the relationship between seismic intensity measures and nonlinear structural response

Yeudy F. Vargas-Alzate et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the probabilistic analysis of Intensity Measures (IMs) and Engineering Demand Parameters (EDPs) in earthquake-induced ground motions. Efficiency, sufficiency, and steadfastness are important statistical properties quantified for a set of IMs with respect to predicting two EDPs. The efficiency and stability of IMs in forecasting EDPs for large building suites have been explored to reduce the number of calculations in seismic risk estimations.

Effects of vertical ground acceleration on the seismic moment demand of bridge superstructure connections

Hartanto Wibowo et al.

Summary: Vertical ground accelerations can have a significant impact on bridge superstructures, particularly in connections and bearing forces. However, current design practices do not sufficiently account for the effects of high vertical ground accelerations. This study investigates the response of steel bridge superstructures to large magnitude vertical ground accelerations and finds that the moment demands can be amplified by over 100% at certain locations.

Effect of near-fault vertical ground motions on failure mode of long-span sea-crossing cable-stayed bridges

Jian Zhong et al.

Summary: Existing investigations have shown that near-fault vertical ground motion (VGM) has a significant impact on the seismic performance of bridge structures. This study examines the combined effect of VGM and horizontal ground motion (HGM) on the failure mode and component damage sequence of long-span sea-crossing cable-stayed bridges. The results indicate that VGM has little effect on the damage probability of the bearings, but has an adverse effect on the damage probability of the pylons and piers.

Empirical models of bridge seismic fragility surface considering the vertical effect of near-fault ground motions

Yahui Shao et al.

Summary: Research on the impact of VGM on bridge structures, proposing a novel bridge seismic fragility surface model and establishing probabilistic seismic demand and capacity models. By simulating a simply supported bridge model, the seismic fragility under combined actions of horizontal ground motion and VGM was explored.

An empirical model for the vertical-to-horizontal spectral ratios for Italy

Fadel Ramadan et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel empirical Ground Motion prediction Model (GMM) for shallow crustal earthquakes in Italy, predicting vertical-to-horizontal response spectral amplitudes and peak ground acceleration and velocity. The model, calibrated on the most up-to-date strong motion dataset, is useful for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in Italy.
