3D Printed concrete with coarse aggregates: Built-in-Stirrup permanent concrete formwork for reinforced columns

Yidong Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the axial compression performance of reinforced columns with 3D-printed permanent concrete formwork. It proposes a novel square stirrup with reserved longitudinal reinforcement holes and its built-in-stirrup permanent concrete formwork method (BSPCF). Experimental results show that columns with only 3D-printed formwork face early spalling and significant reduction in bearing capacity. Using BSPCF can effectively avoid these problems and enhance the column bearing capacity. X-ray computed tomography reveals the sudden decrease in aggregate content and increase of voids in the interface region, further emphasizing the importance of BSPCF in stress transfer.

Experimental study on large-scale 3D printed concrete walls under axial compression

Xiaoyu Han et al.

Summary: The study found that the failure of 3D printed concrete walls under axial compression loads is brittle, and the use of horizontal steel reinforcement reduces their ultimate bearing capacity, with the layers where the horizontal steel reinforcement is set becoming weak zones.

Shaking table tests of a resilient bridge system with precast reinforced concrete columns equipped with springs

Natalia Reggiani Manzo et al.

Summary: This paper presents the shake table test results of a novel system for the design of precast reinforced concrete bridges. The system increases stability by adding a flexible restraining system and anchoring the tendon within the column, reducing foundation size. The tests showed the system's resilience but also highlighted the risk of failure in certain circumstances.

Analytical model for evaluating lateral force capacity of precast concrete-filled steel tube column

Kaidi Zhang et al.

Summary: A non-iterative simplified analytical model was proposed in this study to predict the lateral force capacity of post-tensioned precast segmental columns. The model was validated through quasi-static tests and finite element modeling, demonstrating good agreement with experimental and numerical results. The gravity load and reinforcement ratio of prestressed tendons were found to have a significant impact on the post-yield stiffness of the columns.

Fresh and anisotropic-mechanical properties of 3D printable ultra-high ductile concrete with crumb rubber

Junhong Ye et al.

Summary: A novel ultra-high ductile concrete (UHDC) modified with crumb rubber was developed for 3D concrete printing. Mechanical tests revealed that the printed UHDC had higher deformability and energy dissipation in certain directions compared to mold-cast UHDC. Additionally, minimal anisotropy was found in flexural strength, but significant anisotropy in flexural deformability, compressive strength and flexural energy dissipation capacity of the printed UHDC.

Seismic Performance of Precast Segmental Concrete-Filled Steel-Tube Bridge Columns with Internal and External Energy Dissipaters

Dan Zhang et al.

Summary: The prefabricated segmental column using posttensioning technology has improved construction speed and environmental friendliness. The PSCFST bridge columns with internal or external ED bars can avoid damage to segment joints during seismic events and enhance energy dissipation. Through testing, it was found that PSCFST columns perform well under seismic loads, while MRC columns suffer severe damage.

Summary: This study focuses on the design of load-bearing walls in 3D-printed buildings, conducting experiments on different wall samples and finite-element analysis to evaluate the behavior of the walls. Results show that the flat wall with an inner truss outperformed the diamond wall, providing a new perspective on design flexibility.

3D concrete printing of permanent formwork for concrete column construction

Binrong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the 3D concrete printing for permanent formwork in concrete column construction. By adjusting the HPMC contents and water-to-binder ratios, the study found that a specific mixture can enhance the static yield stress, green strength, and bearing capacity of the permanent formwork. Additionally, concrete columns constructed using printed concrete as permanent formwork exhibited higher stiffness and bearing capacity compared to traditional concrete columns.

A novel precast concrete beam-to-column connection with replaceable energy-dissipation connector: Experimental investigation and theoretical analysis

Chao Tong et al.

Summary: A novel precast concrete beam-to-column connection is proposed in this study to prevent damage from beam overstrength and strength hierarchy alteration. The use of replaceable energy-dissipation connectors (REDCs) and vertical slots significantly reduce additional bending moments and improve seismic performance. Finite element models further demonstrate the controllable variable nature of the bending moments in this novel connection design.

3D printing eco-friendly concrete containing under-utilised and waste solids as aggregates

Gang Bai et al.

Summary: 3D concrete printing technology provides an opportunity for utilising underutilised and waste solids as aggregates. The experimental study in this article shows that the self-supporting skeletal effect formed by gradated particles can improve the construction performance of mixtures and reduce the shrinkage of the cement matrix. These findings provide feasible solutions for promoting the eco-utilisation of underutilised and waste solids in 3D printing while meeting strength and durability requirements.
