Bridge Damage Detection Through Combined Quasi-static Influence Lines and Weigh-in-motion Devices

M. Breccolotti et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new damage detection method for bridge structures by combining influence lines for deflections and rotations with weigh-in-motion devices. An optimization technique based on genetic algorithm is used to identify the flexural stiffness distribution, showing the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Research on dynamic behavior and traffic management decision-making of suspension bridge after vortex-induced vibration event

Danhui Dan et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of traffic loads on the dynamic behavior of suspension bridges by proposing two mechanical models, deriving expressions for modal damping ratio, solving frequency equations using an algorithm, and studying a numerical case to examine the influence of traffic loads on structural dynamic characteristics. The results show that traffic loads affect the dynamic characteristics of suspension bridges, reducing the modal frequency and increasing the modal damping ratio. Field monitoring data further confirm the significant contribution of traffic loads to structural damping, which helps prevent and eliminate vortex-induced vibration response.

A computer vision-based method for bridge model updating using displacement influence lines

Alberto Martini et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new computer vision-based method that simultaneously provides the moving vehicle's tire loads, the location of the loads on a bridge, and the bridge's response displacements, based on which the bridge's influence lines can be constructed. The method employs computer vision techniques to measure the displacement influence lines of the bridge at different target positions, which is then later used to perform model updating of the finite element models of the monitored structural system. The method offers a low-cost non-contact monitoring tool that can be efficiently used without disrupting traffic for bridges in model updating analysis or long-term structural health monitoring.

A novel gradient-based matching via voting technique for vision-based structural displacement measurement

Miaomin Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel gradient-based matching via voting (GMV) technique to overcome environmental factors and provide reliable tracking of moved targets with different degrees of feature loss. The experiments demonstrate that GMV is able to retrieve accurate displacement data for moved targets with high feature losses.

Bridge Damage Detection Approach Using a Roving Camera Technique

Darragh Lydon et al.

Summary: Increasing extreme climate events, intensifying traffic patterns, and long-term underinvestment have led to the escalated deterioration of bridges. Structural Health Monitoring systems objectively capture deterioration, with computer vision technology providing a low-cost, rapid instrumentation solution. However, the need for many cameras may be cost-prohibitive for some bridge types.
