Stochastic analysis of steel frames considering the material, geometrical and loading uncertainties

Huy-Khanh Dang et al.

Summary: This paper develops a Stochastic Practical Advanced Analysis Program for stochastic analysis of structural steel frames by combining the second-order refined plastic-hinge analysis method with the simulation of Latin Hypercube Sampling. The program predicts the ultimate load-carrying capacity of steel frames and investigates the sensitivity of uncertain input parameters. The results can be used in steel structure design and maintenance in practice.

An advanced computational method for nonlinear inelastic thermo-mechanical analysis of spatial steel frames in fires

Van-Thuc Luu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel computational method that incorporates the stability functions and the distributed plasticity model into the fiber beam-column element to predict the nonlinear inelastic thermo-mechanical behavior of spatial steel frames in fires. The method captures the space spread of plasticity by tracing the temperature-stress-strain relation of each fiber, and considers geometric nonlinearity, shear deformation, and residual stresses. The proposed method offers excellent computational efficiency and is verified to be reliable and accurate through comparisons with test data and existing studies.

Uncertainty analysis in solid mechanics with uniform and triangular distributions using stochastic perturbation-based Finite Element Method

Marcin Kaminski

Summary: This paper presents the theoretical formulation and computational implementation of the Stochastic perturbation-based Finite Element Method (SFEM) for uncertainty analysis in solid mechanics with symmetric non-Gaussian input parameters. The method is based on general order Taylor expansions of all uncertain input parameters and state functions, with a focus on even orders only. The implementation of SFEM for the displacement version of FEM has been completed using statistically optimized nodal polynomial response bases, and the results have been validated using probabilistic semi-analytical approach and Monte-Carlo simulation.

Deterministic and stochastic thermomechanical nonlinear dynamic responses of functionally graded sandwich plates

Minh-Chien Trinh et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the deterministic and stochastic dynamics of functionally graded composites in sandwich plates with four different layering configurations under thermomechanical loads for the first time. The study reveals that the plates exhibit dynamic hardening behaviors, and the presence of thermal loads results in more diverse random responses in stochastic environments. This work provides valuable insights into the deterministic and stochastic dynamics of composites, which are essential for practical engineering applications.

A hybrid machine learning approach in prediction and uncertainty quantification of ultimate compressive strength of RCFST columns

Mai Suong T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This article introduces a machine learning-based approach to estimate the ultimate compressive strength of rectangular concrete-filled steel tube (RCFST) columns and perform an uncertainty quantification. The hybrid model PANN is built and benchmarked against design codes, showing that it is an ideal alternative model for predicting compressive strength. The study proposes the use of Monte Carlo technique to investigate stochastic compressive strength behaviors of RCFST columns and emphasize the systematic consideration of uncertainties in the analysis and design process.

The soft Monte Carlo method

Mohsen Rashki

Summary: This study introduces a new probability concept, random probability density function (PDF), as an efficient alternative to random sampling for probability/reliability analysis of multivariate problems. By drawing a few random PDFs instead of millions of random samples, accurate and efficient statistical moment estimation and reliability analysis of multivariable problems can be achieved.

Stochastic assessment of concrete core strength in fire exposed specimens simulating non-engineered RC structures in Turkey

Fatma Birinci Kayaalp et al.

Summary: This study simulated the spatial variability of concrete compressive strength in a specific region using a stochastic method, focusing on cores taken from fire-exposed beams simulating non-engineered structures in Turkey. The uneven distribution of concrete compressive strength was analyzed by a random fields approach, which accurately reproduced experimentally observed uncertainties. By generating statistical samples through Latin Hypercube Sampling, the scatter in compressive strength at different temperature levels was predicted with a total of 500 random samples.

Stochastic buckling quantification of laminated composite plates using cell-based smoothed finite elements

Minh-Chien Trinh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of uncertainty in fiber angles, laminate dimensions, and constituent material properties on the buckling load of composite laminates, using a stochastic approach. The method employs a Monte Carlo simulation with a small effective number of samples and a fast convergence rate. The accuracy of stochastic results is observed, with non-unique buckling modes occurring at increasing probabilities as the degree of stochasticity increases.
