3D DEM modeling of biocemented sand with fines as cementing agents

Huanran Wu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel 3D DEM modeling scheme to reproduce various precipitation patterns in MICP-treated sand, by using coarse particles to represent sand grains and fines as cementing agents. The microstructural characteristics and their evolution upon external loading are investigated, and the effects of precipitation patterns on the mechanical improvement are revealed.

Transport and Fate of Ureolytic Sporosarcina pasteurii in Saturated Sand Columns: Experiments and Modelling

Guijie Sang et al.

Summary: In this study, the transport and retention behaviors of Sporosarcina pasteurii in saturated sand were investigated under different conditions. A two-site kinetic model was used to quantify and predict the bacterial attachment and straining. The results showed that increasing ionic strength significantly enhanced the retention efficiency, while increasing flow velocity decreased attachment and straining. These findings provide valuable information for understanding the transport and fate of S. pasteurii in saturated soil and optimizing bioaugmentation and cementation strategies for soil improvement.

Performance of colloidal silica grout at elevated temperatures and pressures for cement fracture sealing at depth

Arianna Gea Pagano et al.

Summary: This study presents a proof of concept for using colloidal silica (CS) based grout to improve well sealing in plug and abandonment operations. The research demonstrates the successful deployment of CS grout up to a depth of 1500 meters and its potential for repairing fine-aperture cracks, reducing permeability values by three orders of magnitude.

Rainfall-Induced Erosion of Biocemented Graded Slopes

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) was investigated as a potential solution to rainfall-induced erosion of sandy slopes. The results showed that MICP treatment effectively mitigated internal erosion of slopes with different uniformity coefficients, but caution is needed when considering its impact on surface erosion.

Large-scale spatial characterization and liquefaction resistance of sand by hybrid bacteria induced biocementation

Meghna Sharma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial variability and synergistic effects of bacterial hybrids for sand biocementation. The large-scale testing showed effective and substantial biocementation using the cultivated hybrid bacteria and bio-chem distribution/air sparging system. The study provides valuable insights for optimizing biotreatment under field applications.

Application of microbial induced carbonate precipitation for loess surface erosion control

Yao-Jia Cheng et al.

Summary: China faces severe soil erosion disasters, especially in the Loess Plateau region. A new strategy using MICP technology for loess surface erosion control was proposed, showing the ability to significantly mitigate rainfall erosion and enhance soil structure strength. The MICP-induced double layer structure, with an upper hard crust layer and lower weak cemented layer, plays a key role in erosion resistance, and treatment with 1.0 M cementation solution is optimal for improving soil properties and reducing erosion.

Compression behavior of MICP-treated sand with various gradations

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: One-dimensional compression tests on quartz sands treated by MICP showed that compressibility increased with higher coefficient of uniformity or lower CaCO3 content. The evolution of void ratio under vertical stress could be categorized into three stages, with bond breakage initiating at around 0.036 MPa and transitioning to particle breakage at 8.3 MPa.

Stress-Dilatancy Behavior of MICP-Treated Sand

Shifan Wu et al.

Summary: Biocementation of soil using microbial-induced carbonate precipitation is a new approach for soil treatment. Biocemented sand exhibits much higher dilatancy than uncemented sand, which is related to higher shear strength mainly due to higher effective cohesion. The stress-dilatancy relationship of biocemented sand can be interpreted under the framework of Rowe's stress-dilatancy theory.

Tensile behavior of bio-cemented, fiber-reinforced calcareous sand from coastal zone

Hao Zeng et al.

Summary: The combination of fiber reinforcement and bio-cementation based on microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) can enhance the tensile behavior and structural integrity of calcareous sands. Fibers increase sand ductility, but excessive fibers may negatively impact sand tensile strength.
