Visualising fluid migration due to hydrate dissociation: implications for submarine slides

Summary: This study demonstrates that fluid migration during hydrate dissociation has a significant impact on submarine landslides. The results reveal the extension and depth of the potential slide surface, as well as the possible low-angle failure of clay slopes due to fluid overpressure and underestimated slope inclination. By proposing a new conceptual model, this research addresses the non-conformity between the slide surface and the base of the gas hydrate stability zone and offers a new perspective on large-scale failure of low-angle submarine slopes. It will be interesting and important to further confirm these implications in the future.

The impact of internal solitary waves on deep-sea benthic organisms on the continental slope of the northern South China Sea

Summary: This study investigates the propagation characteristics of internal solitary waves (ISWs) and their impact on benthic organisms in the deep-sea floor of the northern South China Sea. In-situ observation shows that the abundance and density of benthic organisms are positively correlated with the time and intensity of ISWs. The impact of ISWs includes an increase in the abundance and density of benthic organisms, resuspension of bottom sediments, formation of marine snow, changes in the bottom boundary layer environment, and vertical transfer of seawater environmental factors.

Seabed fluid flow in the China Seas

Summary: Seabed fluid flow is a widespread and important natural phenomenon in marine environments, involving complex multi-physics, multi-process and multi-scale processes. The advancements in offshore geophysical technology have enabled the discovery of widespread seabed fluid emissions. To gain perspective on future research in the China Seas, we reviewed data, reports, and publications related to cold seeps in the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea. This study provides a comprehensive overview of seabed fluid flow in these areas, offering basic information for further analytical studies and exploring the processes and implications.

Study on the Relationship between Resistivity and the Physical Properties of Seafloor Sediments Based on the Deep Neural Learning Algorithm

Summary: Studying the physical properties of seafloor sediments is essential for monitoring and providing early warnings of deep-sea geohazards. Existing physical property inversion methods have limited accuracy and application scope, but a deep learning model linking the resistivity of seafloor sediment with its density, water content, and porosity shows improved prediction accuracy. Applying this algorithm to the South China Sea hydrate test area reveals distinct stratification patterns in the dynamic changes of physical properties, with significant variations observed at depths of 0-0.9 m and stability observed at depths of 0.9-1.8 m below the seafloor. This study enables the monitoring and early warning of dynamic changes in seafloor sediment physical properties, ensuring the safety of marine engineering construction.

Nepheloid layer generation by gas eruption: unexpected experimental results

Summary: Knowledge of nepheloid layers is crucial for understanding various processes in different marine environments. In our experiment, we discovered the generation of intermediate nepheloid layers through gas eruptions, challenging the existing belief that stratified fluid is necessary for their formation. We also found that advection space and an oblique slope are key factors for the generation of intermediate nepheloid layers. Additionally, our study provides evidence for the generation of bottom nepheloid layers through earthquakes, highlighting the need to determine the natural causes of intermediate nepheloid layers.

A GPU-Based δ-Plus-SPH Model for Non-Newtonian Multiphase Flows

Earthquake response and post-earthquake stability assessment of submarine clay slopes
