Plastic deformation and ductile fracture of L907A ship steel at increasing strain rate and temperature

Xue Li et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study was conducted to characterize the plastic deformation and ductile fracture behaviors of L907A low-alloy ship steel. The effects of strain rate and thermal softening were taken into consideration. Constitutive models were proposed and calibrated using dynamic and quasi-static tensile tests. The models were numerically implemented and validated against experimental results of ballistic impacts, showing good agreement.

Fracture mechanism and failure strain of TA31 titanium alloy for deep-sea pressure hulls based on continuum damage mechanics

Bowen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the fracture mechanism and failure strain of TA31 titanium alloy under different stress states were investigated. The Modified Johnson-Cook (MJC) model and the Bonora damage model were used to study the fracture behavior, considering the pressure sensitivity. The results showed that the Bonora model with constant parameters was not accurate in predicting the failure strain, and the damage parameters were sensitive to the stress triaxiality. Microscopic analysis using scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed the micro-mechanism of failure for TA31 titanium alloy.

Strain-rate and stress-state dependent ductile fracture model of S690 high-strength steel

Mingxu Shang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stress-state and strain-rate dependent ductile fracture initiation property of S690 high-strength steel through experiments and simulations. Various types of specimens are tested, and the Cowper-Symonds-type rate correction term is considered in the yield function and ductile fracture initiation locus. Linear and non-linear damage accumulation evolutions are discussed for different loading conditions. The proposed stress-state and strain-rate dependent ductile fracture model is validated through a hybrid experimental and numerical approach.

Ultra-low cycle fatigue fracture initiation life evaluation of thick-walled steel bridge piers with microscopic damage index under bidirectional cyclic loading

Shuailing Li et al.

Summary: This paper examines the fracture behavior of thick-walled square section steel bridge piers under earthquake loading and proposes a microscope damage index for evaluating the ULCF fracture initiation life of the piers. The findings reveal that the strength capacity of the piers rapidly declines when cracks propagate into the base metal.

Evaluation of Localized Necking Models for Fracture Prediction in Punch-Loaded Steel Panels

Burak Can Cerik et al.

Summary: This study compared experimental test results on punch-loaded unstiffened and stiffened panels with numerical predictions using different localized necking modeling approaches with shell elements. The extended version of the Bressan-Williams-Hill (BWH) criterion, including bending effects and forming-severity concept, yielded improved estimations of fracture initiation with shell elements, while mesh size sensitivity depended on the punch geometry.

Prediction model for initiation in cracked component under very low cycle fatigue

Jin-Ha Hwang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a model to predict the initiation cycle of a cracked component under very low cycle fatigue, based on the assumption that the mechanism of crack initiation remains the same under monotonic loading. The predicted cycles are validated against different test data and show similar results in all cases.

Localized Necking Model for Punching Fracture Simulation in Unstiffened and Stiffened Panels

Sung-Ju Park et al.

Summary: The ductile fracture of thin-shell structures was studied using a localized necking model in combination with the Swift hardening law for plasticity modeling. The proposed HC-DSSE model, incorporating a combined Hosford-Coulomb fracture model and DSSE, accurately predicted fracture initiation in punch tests.

Experimental numerical and analytical analysis of the penetration of a scaled double-hull tanker side structure

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: This paper conducts experimental, numerical, and analytical analyses to investigate the energy-absorbing mechanism and fracture of a small-scale double-hull structure punched quasi-statically at the mid-span by a rigid flat edge indenter. The results show good agreement between experimental and numerical simulations, providing practical information for estimating the extent of structural damage in ship sides during collision accidents. The analysis demonstrates the accuracy of the procedure used to identify standard inputs in numerical codes and proposes a revised semi-analytical method for large penetration stages.

Low-cycle fatigue behavior of H-shaped steel piles of an integral concrete bridge subjected to temperature variations

Hamid Abdollahnia et al.

Summary: The research estimated the fatigue life of steel piles of an integral bridge under displacement control conditions due to temperature variations using Finite Element simulation to determine the critical region and employing the strain-life criterion for calculation. The comparison between finite element results and experimental data showed a 6.5% difference, with findings indicating crack or tear size increases with continued loading.
