Temperature and AK dependence of grain boundary effect on fatigue crack propagation in a two-dimensional polycrystalline Ni-base superalloy

Summary: The effects of grain boundaries on fatigue crack propagation in a cast Ni-base superalloy were investigated. The study found that grain boundaries can retard the propagation of shear cracks and accelerate the propagation of cracks along high angle boundaries. Secondary cracks can also be nucleated along high angle boundaries.

Unforeseen, negative interaction-effect of adjacent circumferential notches on the fatigue limit of Ni-based superalloy 718

Saburo Okazaki et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interaction-effects of adjacent, circumferential V-notches on the fatigue limit of Alloy 718, and found that specimens with seven adjacent circumferential notches had lower fatigue limit than those with a single circumferential notch. This was attributed to the increased stress intensity factor range of shear-mode fatigue cracks at notch-roots, resulting from the competition between stress mitigation through the mechanistic interaction of notches and the orderly spatial alignment of crack-planes.

Fatigue limit of Ni-based superalloy 718 relative to the shear-mode crack-growth threshold: A quantitative evaluation considering the influence of crack-opening and -closing stresses

Yuya Tanaka et al.

Summary: The fatigue strength of Ni-based superalloy 718 was investigated relative to shear-mode crack-growth thresholds, with precipitation-hardening found to have a negligible impact. It was determined that crack-opening/-closing stresses only imperceptibly alter shear-mode resistance. Based on these findings, a novel strategy for quantifying the alloy's fatigue strength was proposed.
