Simulation of droplet bouncing on flexible substrate in 2D and 3D with WC-TL SPH method

Xiangwei Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, a fully meshfree model of fluid-solid interaction is developed based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The model can simulate the bouncing of liquid droplets on flexible substrates in both 2D and 3D cases. The computational cost of 3D simulation is reduced by combining the TL-SPH model with shell theory to establish the TL-SPH-shell model.

A SPH-lattice spring method for modelling Fluid Structure Interaction involving composite body and free surface

W. C. Low et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of a 3D particle-based Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) solver for composite structures. The solver combines Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for fluid modelling and Volume-Compensated Particle Method (VCPM) for solid modelling. The capabilities of the solver are demonstrated through the verification with benchmark solutions and the simulation of a practical engineering problem involving water slamming on a sandwich hull.

A generalized hybrid smoothed particle hydrodynamics-peridynamics algorithm with a novel Lagrangian mapping for solution and failure analysis of fluid-structure interaction problems

Mohammad Naqib Rahimi et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel hybrid algorithm coupling Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and Peridynamics (PD) to model extreme fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with and without multi-scale defects. The algorithm is validated through well-accepted benchmark test cases and applied to simulate various extreme FSI problems with close agreement to literature data. The study proposes a new perspective for coupling different particle methods to achieve high-fidelity and low-cost modeling of complex FSI problems involving multi-scale defects and failure propagations.

Summary: In this paper, the computational efficiency of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics-Volume Compensated Particle Method (SPH-VCPM) is enhanced by incorporating a multi-resolution strategy for solving Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems involving free surface. The convergence and stability of the method are tested, and the solver is applied to solve dynamic FSI problems with successful verification.

Coupled PD-SPH modeling for fluid-structure interaction problems with large deformation and fracturing

Xuehao Yao et al.

Summary: A simple and accurate coupled peridynamics and smoothed particle hydrodynamics strategy is proposed for simulating fluid-structure interaction problems with large deformation and fracturing. The approach utilizes virtual particles and repulsive forces to ensure full kernel support of fluid particles and prevent penetration in the fluid-structure interfacial region. Validation studies show that the proposed method is capable of accurately modeling complex fluid-induced solid breaking problems.

A pseudo-spring based SPH framework for studying fatigue crack propagation

Kona Veera Ganesh et al.

Summary: In this paper, a pseudo-spring-based Eulerian form of SPH is adopted to model mode-I fatigue crack propagation. By stopping the interactions between the crack front particle and its neighbors with the largest axial stresses, the framework can accurately determine stress intensity factors and capture the fatigue crack path and fatigue life of different specimens.

Summary: This work develops a 3D particle-based FSI solver for simulating hydroelastic problems involving free surface. By implementing the SS scheme and multiple time-stepping procedure in DualSPHysics, as well as using the VCPM model, complex 3D FSI problems can be simulated within a reasonable time frame and with improved computational efficiency.

A coupled incompressible SPH-Hamiltonian SPH solver for hydroelastic FSI corresponding to composite structures

Abbas Khayyer et al.

Summary: This paper presents a fully Lagrangian meshfree projection-based hydroelastic FSI solver within the SPH framework for simulating incompressible fluid flows interacting with laminated composite elastic structures. The solver utilizes an enhanced version of Incompressible SPH for fluids and a structure model in the context of Hamiltonian SPH for laminated composite elastic structures. The solver demonstrates superior performance without artificial stabilizers or smoothing of material properties at material interfaces, and its potential applicability for practical engineering applications is highlighted through challenging simulations.

A fully Lagrangian formulation for fluid-structure interaction problems with free-surface flows and fracturing solids

Alejandro Cornejo et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel coupled formulation for fluid-structure interaction problems involving free-surface fluid flows, fracture phenomena, solid mutual contact, and large displacements. The method combines three different Lagrangian computational methods and has high potential for predicting structural damages caused by natural hazards. It can also be applied to fracture phenomena in structures and soils/rocks arising from explosions or hydraulic fracking processes.

A fluid-structure interaction model for free-surface flows and flexible structures using smoothed particle hydrodynamics on a GPU

Joseph O'Connor et al.

Summary: This paper develops a numerical model for violent hydrodynamics of free-surface flows interacting with flexible structures using the SPH method accelerated with a GPU. By addressing known deficiencies in SPH-based structural modeling and implementing a unified SPH framework, the proposed model shows good agreement with benchmark solutions and achieves significant speedups on GPUs compared to CPU versions. This indicates the proposed model is a viable and efficient approach for simulating violent free-surface fluid-structure interactions.
