An experimental and numerical study of the strengthening of masonry brick vaults

Sukran Tanriverdi

Summary: Experimental studies were conducted to investigate reinforcement techniques for masonry vaults using steel and different types of CFRP strip applications. The results showed that the load-bearing capacity of the reinforced samples increased by at least 45% compared to the non-reinforced sample.

Micro-mechanical FE modelling and constitutive parameters calibration of masonry panels strengthened with CFRP sheets

Tommaso Rotunno et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of a micro-mechanical finite element model that can simulate the behavior of masonry walls reinforced with CFRP sheets. The study shows that when CFRP sheets are bonded parallel to the bed joints, the walls behave like un-connected masonry portions. Therefore, only this effective part is considered in the research. The study calibrates the constitutive parameters and performs a sensitivity analysis.

The cause of damage and failure of the Mud-brick vault of the Khan in New-Gourna

Simon Szabo et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the Khan, a central building in New Gourna, Egypt, designed by Hassan Fathy. Using advanced Finite Element method, the study simulated the gradual deformation and failure of the structure, ultimately finding that the wetting of the mud mortar between the limestone elements in the plinth is the root cause of the failure. This wetting is believed to be caused by the dramatic change in groundwater level due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the increase in wastewater caused by a growing population in New Gourna.

Seismic vulnerability assessment of free-standing massive masonry columns by the 3D Discrete Element Method

Jinwoo Kim et al.

Summary: The study focuses on seismic vulnerability assessment of free-standing masonry columns using the 3-D Discrete Element Method. It includes calibration of elastic parameters and development of fragility curves from time history analysis results. The method was verified on water towers in Pompeii, Italy, showing the potential for assessing overturning probabilities and conducting parametric studies of damping constants.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical study on a U-shaped masonry structure reinforced with Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM) subjected to horizontal loads. The study involved pseudodynamic displacement-driven cycles and nonlinear numerical simulations to evaluate the effectiveness of TRM strengthening in improving the behavior of old masonry buildings under horizontal loads.

Laboratory and numerical analysis of failure of stone masonry arches with and without reinforcement

Richard Varro et al.

Summary: Maintenance and determination of load-bearing capacity of existing masonry arch structures are important issues. Testing on smaller models under laboratory conditions helps understand their behavior and determine key parameters. The research also includes destructive tests of small scale stone masonry arches to compare reinforced and unreinforced structures.
