Early wheel flat detection: an automatic data-driven wavelet-based approach for railways

Araliya Mosleh et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop an unsupervised early damage detection methodology that can automatically distinguish a defective wheel from a healthy one by evaluating the acceleration and shear forces on railway tracks. The proposed methodology involves data acquisition, feature extraction, feature normalization, data fusion, and feature classification, and has been shown to effectively detect wheel defects.

Loop track: an infinite long track model

Qing Wu et al.

Summary: This paper developed a new track model called the 'Loop Track', which can simulate infinite long tracks without requiring heavy data movement. By using the Finite Element Method and equivalent rigid bodies connected by flexible force elements, the track, sleepers, ballast, subballast, and subgrade were modeled. The loop feature was achieved by adding an extra boundary section to link the last and first node sets of the track model. Case studies were conducted to determine the minimum track length required for different simulations, with recommended values of 76 sleepers for vertical track dynamics and 301 sleepers for longitudinal track dynamics.

Development and computational performance improvement of the wheel-rail coupling for heavy haul locomotive traction studies

Maksym Spiryagin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a specially developed wheel-rail coupling model based on the Extended Contact library, which is incorporated in a full mechatronic model of a modern heavy haul locomotive. The implementation of parallel computing technique allows for reasonable computational performance. This complex approach shows a perspective for competing with the standard approach and providing accurate results required for locomotive/track damage studies.

Integration of a dissipative contact force model into vehicle-track dynamics for analysing wheel-rail dynamic interaction under short-wavelength irregularity

Dexiang Ren et al.

Summary: Accurately estimating the wheel-rail dynamic interaction is crucial as it has a detrimental effect on the service life of vehicle and track components. By integrating dissipative contact force models into a validated vehicle-track coupled dynamics model, the energy dissipation at the wheel-rail interface can be considered. The Hu-Guo model is identified as the most suitable one for wheel-rail interaction analysis, which significantly reduces contact force fluctuation and has a phase lead at high frequencies above 1250 Hz.

On the modelling of normal wheel-rail contact for high-frequency vehicle-track dynamics analyses

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: A transient wheel-rail rolling contact model and a vehicle-track coupled dynamics model were developed to calculate normal wheel-rail interactions at high frequencies in elasticity. The results of 180 cases showed significant differences in contact forces predicted by the CD model compared to the RC model, indicating the important role of ignored structural and wheel-rail flexibilities in high-frequency interactions. A modified non-linear Hertzian spring was developed to improve the accuracy of the CD model with reference to the RC predictions, providing insights for determination of contact spring and contact filter effect at high frequencies.

The effect of 3D wear state of wheel polygon on wheel-rail system dynamics

Dabin Cui et al.

Summary: Wheel wear is a common phenomenon during wheel-rail rolling contact, with non-uniform wear in lateral and circumferential directions. These two forms of wear are coupled on wheels, affecting the dynamic behaviors of the wheel-rail system. The contact mechanical properties of wheel-rail are greatly affected by the 3D wheel profile, leading to increased vibrational acceleration and wear issues.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel local ellipse method to handle the difference between elliptical and non-elliptical contact in wheel-rail rolling contact. The method provides an efficient pre-process through the determination of local virtual ellipse using elliptic integral, contact pressure, and contact boundary.

Wheel-rail rolling contact behavior induced by both rail surface irregularity and sleeper hanging defects on a high-speed railway line

Fei Yang et al.

Summary: A transient rolling contact model accounting for the nonlinear displacement-force properties of hanging sleepers was proposed in the study, revealing that the severity of sleeper hanging is significantly affected by rail surface irregularities and can exacerbate wheel-rail impact and increase contact force, leading to plastic deformation of the rail material. Impacts on adhesion-slip states and rolling contact fatigue due to sleeper hanging defects were found to be minimal.

Comparisons between beam and continuum models for modelling wheel-rail impact at a singular rail surface defect

Chen Shen et al.

Summary: This paper compares the application of beam and continuum finite element models in wheel-rail impact problems, revealing differences through time-frequency analysis and parameter evaluation. Results show performance disparities between the two models at specific frequencies, and comparison with field observations demonstrates the greater accuracy of the continuum finite element model.
