Comprehensive review of machine learning in geotechnical reliability analysis: Algorithms, applications and further challenges

Wengang Zhang et al.

Summary: Geotechnical reliability analysis has gained great attention in recent decades by considering geotechnical uncertainties and evaluating the stability of geotechnical structures from a probabilistic perspective. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence techniques, various machine learning algorithms have been successfully applied in this field. However, a systematic summary of the subject is still lacking. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of machine learning applications in geotechnical reliability analysis, summarizing achievements and outlining future research possibilities.

A practical and efficient reliability-based design optimization method for rock tunnel support

Hongbo Zhao

Summary: Uncertainty is a common challenge in rock mechanics and engineering. This study proposes a reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) approach using the moment method and high-dimensional model representation (HDMR) to determine design parameters for rock engineering. The proposed method accurately estimates the statistical moment of a rock tunnel response through multiplicative dimensional reduction (MDRM) and analyzes the complex response of the engineering structure using HDMR. The results show that the RBDO approach can effectively consider uncertainties in the design, stability analysis, and construction of rock engineering.

Prediction of lining response for twin tunnels constructed in anisotropic clay using machine learning techniques

Wengang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the factors affecting the structural forces of twin tunnels using finite element analysis. The results show that the tunnel distance and overlying soil depth significantly affect the bending moment and thrust force of the linings. The degree of anisotropy of the surrounding soil is also crucial in simulating twin tunnel construction.

A new rock physics model to estimate shear velocity log

Mohammad Dalvand et al.

Summary: Shear velocity log is crucial for reservoir characterization and various methods including empirical relations, multi-regression analysis, and artificial neural networks are used to estimate it. This study in a gas reservoir in Iran utilized empirical relations, multi-regression analysis, and ANN to estimate shear velocity log. Additionally, a rock physics-based equation was developed to estimate shear velocity log with good accuracy.

A reduced order model based on machine learning for numerical analysis: An application to geomechanics

Hongbo Zhao

Summary: The study introduces a reduced-order numerical model to approximate displacement and stress fields in geotechnical and geological engineering by combining numerical methods, POD, and MSVM. Results show good agreement with analytical and numerical solutions, and predicted deformations align with rock mechanics theory. The proposed method can effectively predict deformation and mechanical behavior of geomaterials for back analysis, optimal design, and uncertainty analysis in geotechnical and geological engineering.
