Performance optimization of a wavy finned-tube heat exchanger with staggered curved vortex generators

DongLiang Hu et al.

Summary: A novel staggered configuration of concave curved vortex generators is proposed to enhance the thermal performance in a wavy finned-tube heat exchanger. Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effect of different transverse locations of the vortex generators on the thermal performance. Results indicate that the staggered arrangement of concave curved vortex generators can generate counter-rotated longitudinal vortices and enhance heat transfer. Compared to other configurations, the proposed arrangement significantly improves the overall performance with a 30.4% increase in Nusselt number and a 25.9% increase in the thermal performance factor.

Energy saving and pollution reduction through optimal scheduling of cleaning actions in a heat exchanger network

Marian Trafczynski et al.

Summary: Heat exchanger fouling can increase the energy intensity of production processes by impairing energy recovery in Heat Exchanger Networks (HENs). Measurement data can be used to monitor fouling growth and schedule exchanger cleaning. This research applies a preferred measurement-aided method to optimize scheduling of cleaning actions in a HEN, with the objective of maximizing avoided operating costs while satisfying timing constraints. A case study using historical operation records demonstrates the economic and energy-saving benefits of the optimization results.

Experimental mass and heat transfer at a serpentine tube heat exchanger located at the wall of a square stirred tank reactor

W. B. Rasslan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mass and heat transfer behavior of a serpentine tube heat exchanger located at the wall of a square stirred tank reactor using the electrochemical technique. The results show that factors such as impeller rotational speed, impeller geometry, tube diameter, and tube pitch affect the mass or heat transfer coefficients. It is also found that the serpentine tube heat exchanger has higher mass transfer rates and can be used as a catalyst support and cooler, reducing the costs of biochemical reactors.

Heat transfer performance of pillow plate heat exchanger with molten salt and supercritical carbon dioxide

Yecheng Yao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel pillow plate heat exchanger (PPHE) for heat transfer between molten salt (MS) and supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO 2 ), and analyzes its flow and thermal performance numerically. The fluid flow pattern, temperature, and heat transfer coefficient vary periodically due to the presence of convex/concave spots. The heat transfer coefficient of PPHE is significantly influenced by its structures, such as the channel height and spot longitudinal distance.

Investigating thermo-hydraulic behavior of pillow plate heat exchangers using entropy generation approach

Ali Norouzi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the simulation of turbulent flow and heat transfer in inner pillow plate channels of a pillow plate heat exchanger using Ansys CFX, and calculates the local entropy generation as a post processed task. The effects of different parameters, such as channel height, spot weld diameter, and spot weld arrangement, on the overall entropy generation of the pillow plate heat exchanger are analyzed. The results show that increasing the channel height increases thermal entropy generation, increasing spot weld diameter leads to higher frictional loss, and different spot weld arrangements significantly affect the thermodynamic characteristics of the heat exchanger.
