Techno-economic analysis of a wind-photovoltaic-electrolysis-battery hybrid energy system for power and hydrogen generation

Runzhao Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the techno-economic feasibility of the wind-photovoltaic-electrolysis-battery (WPEB) power system and its capability to reduce curtailment. The WPEB system located in Damao Banner, China, with an installed capacity of 120 MW wind, 80 MW PV, 60 MW electrolyzer, and 20 MW battery bank, is taken as a case study. The main conclusions are as follows: The WPEB system annually generates 584.62 GWh of renewable electricity. By increasing the electrolysis ratio from 0% to 22.31%, the requirement for grid accommodation of generation decreases from 57.56% to 28.72%. The WPEB system successfully applies Power-to-Hydrogen technology to utilize curtailed electricity. A flexible hydrogen demand curve is suitable for boosting hydrogen production and adapting to seasonal and diurnal variations in renewable power generation. The economic performance of the WPEB system benefits from increasing hydrogen production, as the revenue from selling hydrogen/oxygen is higher compared to selling electricity to the grid.

Optimal site selection for the solar-wind hybrid renewable energy systems in Bangladesh using an integrated GIS-based BWM-fuzzy logic method

Kamaleddin Aghaloo et al.

Summary: Solar-Wind Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (SWHRESs) are considered a promising tool for achieving SDG 7 as they provide more reliable and efficient power than single systems. This paper proposes a GIS-based BWM-Fuzzy Logic Method to select optimal sites for SWHRESs in Bangladesh. The results show that SWHRESs outperform wind and solar systems alone, and the most suitable area for installation is Chittagong. The proposed method has been proven robust through sensitivity analysis and is superior to previous methods. This study provides a powerful decision-making tool for SWHRESs and contributes to achieving SDG 7.

Validation of weather reanalysis datasets and geospatial and techno-economic viability and potential assessment of concentrated solar power plants

Momina Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study examines the feasibility of renewable energy systems in Pakistan by analyzing various parameters including meteorological, land-use, techno-economic, and environmental aspects. The researchers find high correlation and low bias in the radiation datasets considered, as well as strong correlation between the temperature and air pressure datasets and ground measurements. Resource maps are created based on long-term timeseries data, and spatial feasibility and site suitability are assessed using specific meteorological, socio-economic, and environmental parameters. The study also evaluates the techno-economic potential of the renewable energy systems using bias-corrected datasets. The research identifies a cumulative power capacity potential of 10,035 GW for Pakistan, with a net cost estimated below 0.096 USD/kWh. Nine sites are found to have the potential to fulfill the country's total predicted energy demand for 2030, but the installation of concentrated solar power plants is limited by factors such as land cover and lack of access to transmission networks.

A GIS-based multi-criteria decision making method for the potential assessment and suitable sites selection of PV and CSP plants

Lijian Sun et al.

Summary: This study combines GIS and MCDM to evaluate suitable locations and potentials for large-scale solar PV and CSP plants, using Ningxia, China as a case study. The results suggest the middle area of Ningxia is recommended for solar power plant deployment, with PV technology being more appropriate than CSP technology for the region.

Air pollution and soiling implications for solar photovoltaic power generation: A comprehensive review

Zhe Song et al.

Summary: Solar photovoltaic (PV) is a promising and highly cost-competitive technology for sustainable power supply, with continuous global growth. However, air pollution and soiling of PV modules prevail worldwide, potentially reducing solar PV power generation significantly. Soiling losses contribute to most of the total power reduction in most regions except in highly polluted areas.
