Day-ahead stochastic scheduling of integrated electricity and heat system considering reserve provision by large-scale heat pumps

Menglin Zhang et al.

Summary: Integrating power and heat sectors can enhance wind power integration flexibility. This study investigates the feasibility and advantages of using large-scale heat pumps for reserve provision. A two-stage stochastic optimization model is proposed to optimize the centralized scheduling of the integrated electricity and heat system, considering wind power uncertainties and the reserve provision of large-scale heat pumps, combined heat and power units, and thermal power units. The benefits of utilizing the reserves from large-scale heat pumps are tested on a modified IEEE-118 bus integrated electricity and heat system. The simulation results demonstrate that using large-scale heat pumps for reserve provision can save costs and reduce wind energy curtailment, and the acceleration algorithm significantly reduces computation time.

Application of a novel heat pump model for estimating economic viability and barriers of heat pumps in dairy applications in the United States

Jordan Cox et al.

Summary: This study examines the techno-economic performance of high-temperature heat pumps (HTHPs) in the U.S. dairy industry and finds that their economic viability is highly dependent on the coefficient of performance and energy price environment. It also suggests that there are potential industries for HTHP adoption even in regions with lower ratios of fossil energy to electricity prices.

Combined energetic, economic and climate change assessment of heat pumps for industrial waste heat recovery

Yoann Jovet et al.

Summary: The recovery of waste heat can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in industrial sectors. A new methodology is developed in this study to determine the minimum conditions for waste heat recovery solutions to comply with the targets of the Paris Agreement. The study focuses on mechanical heat pump solutions (MHPs) in 24 EU countries and finds that all countries are compliant in 2050 for MHP integration with low temperature lift and 21 countries are compliant for high temperature lift. The main barriers to the development of MHP technology in 2030 are economic, while in 2050, countries that do not reach the reduction targets face a high carbon intensity of electricity generation.

Experimental investigation of a high-temperature heat pump for industrial steam production

Changchun Liu et al.

Summary: An experimental prototype of a high-temperature compression-absorption heat pump was investigated, which can produce high-temperature steam using low-grade waste heat and a small amount of electricity. The experimental results indicate that the heat pump is capable of recovering low-temperature flue gas heat for process steam generation.

Integration of a flue gas condensing heat pump within a combined cycle: Thermodynamic, environmental and market assessment

A. Vannoni et al.

Summary: This research aims to propose an innovative solution to enhance the flexibility of CCGT plants by integrating them with a flue gas condensing heat pump. The heat pump increases overall efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions, but its higher capital expenditure limits the viability of the investment, only becoming feasible when the ratio between natural gas prices and electricity prices is high.

Effects of market and climatic conditions over a gas turbine combined cycle integrated with a Heat Pump for inlet cooling

Andrea Giugno et al.

Summary: This study proposes integrating a highly efficient heat pump into a conventional natural gas combined cycle to enhance flexibility, optimizing for power production increase. The research finds that the optimal ratio between air-cooled heat pump electrical consumption and electrical combined cycle capacity is 1/100, applicable to humid subtropical climates and Mediterranean hot summer climates. The study highlights the importance of optimization in influencing revenues and size optimization for integrated systems under different market and climate conditions.
