Salinity gradient energy harvested from thermal desalination for power production by reverse electrodialysis

Jianbo Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of reverse electrodialysis (RED) to extract salinity gradient energy (SGE) for power production in thermal desalination plants. The study models the mass transfer in a single-stage RED stack and analyzes the performance of multi-stage RED (MS-RED) stacks. The results show that RED can effectively harvest SGE and reduce the discharge salinity of seawater.

Response of salinity gradient power generation to inflow mode and temperature difference by reverse electrodialysis

Wei-Zhe Cui et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of inflow modes on the efficiency of salinity gradient power generation in concentrated seawater disposal. The results showed that co-current mode was more effective than counter-current mode, reducing negative impacts on marine ecological environment. Additionally, temperature difference had an impact on power density, with higher temperatures having a positive effect on power generation.

Summary: This study focuses on recovering salinity gradient energy (SGE) between desalinated seawater and seawater from desalination plants using a reverse electrodialysis (RED) approach, and investigates the impact of different parameters on the performance of a RED stack. The results show that a high concentration, temperature, and flow rate can efficiently improve the performance of the RED stack.

Predicting reverse electrodialysis performance in the presence of divalent ions for renewable energy generation

Diego Pintossi et al.

Summary: Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is an electro-membrane process for harvesting renewable energy from salinity gradients. A new model has been developed to account for the presence of multivalent ions in the feedwaters, such as magnesium ions and sulfate, showing good agreement with experimental data and providing a valuable tool for designing and evaluating RED process systems under various conditions and feedwater compositions.
