The rising impact of urbanization-caused CO2 emissions on terrestrial vegetation

Songxi Yang et al.

Summary: Vegetation photosynthesis is significantly affected by urbanization-caused CO2 concentrations. This study evaluated the cumulative effect of urbanization-caused CO2 concentrations from 2009 to 2018 and calculated their impact on global vegetation GPP, NPP, NEP, and SIF. The results showed that urbanization-caused CO2 concentrations accumulated by 3.93 ppm. South America, particularly the Amazon Rainforests, had the highest accumulation of GPP, NPP, NEP, and SIF, due to its tropical rainforest climate. Forests had the greatest impact on global vegetation GPP, NPP, NEP, and SIF accumulation.

Quantifying factory-scale CO2/CH4 emission based on mobile measurements and EMISSION-PARTITION model: cases in China

Tianqi Shi et al.

Summary: The development of measurement-based carbon accounting means is crucial in complementing traditional inventory compilation. Mobile CO2/CH4 measurement offers a flexible approach to inspect plant-scale emissions without prior factory notification. In 2021, our team conducted field campaigns in two cities and one industrial park in China, totaling 1143 km, using a vehicle-based monitoring system. Additionally, we developed EMISSION-PARTITION, a model based on sample concentrations, which utilizes intelligent algorithms and interior point penalty function to determine optimal emission intensity and dispersion parameters. The performance evaluation in chemical, coal washing, and waste incineration plants showcased strong correlations (greater than 0.76) and low RMSE (less than 11.7 mg m(-3)) even with limited samples (25). This study highlights the wide applications of vehicle-based monitoring systems in detecting greenhouse gas emission sources.

CO2 emissions retrieval from coal-fired power plants based on OCO-2/3 satellite observations and a Gaussian plume model

Wenyue Guo et al.

Summary: Evaluation of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants in China using an improved Gaussian plume model and OCO-2/OCO-3 satellite data shows high agreement with existing emission inventory. The study also reveals underestimations of CO2 emissions from certain power plants due to inaccurate emission factors and timing of updates.

Robust algorithm for precise X CO2 retrieval using single observation of IPDA LIDAR

Hongyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: High precision and spatial resolution CO2 column-weighted dry-air mixing ratio (XCO2) products are crucial for inverting CO2 fluxes and enhancing our understanding of global climate change. IPDA LIDAR, as an active remote sensing technique, offers advantages in measuring XCO2. However, random errors in IPDA LIDAR measurements make the directly calculated XCO2 values unqualified. Therefore, an efficient particle filter-based inversion algorithm, EPICSO, is proposed to accurately retrieve XCO2 while preserving the high spatial resolution of LIDAR measurements.

Improving quantification of methane point source emissions from imaging spectroscopy

Zhipeng Pei et al.

Summary: The matched filter (MF) method is widely used for hyperspectral imaging spectrometers to detect and quantify methane point sources efficiently. However, it results in underestimation, especially for large concentration enhancements. This study proposes the iterative lognormal matched filter (ILMF) method to address these challenges and provides unbiased and robust quantification of methane emissions.

Estimating hub-height wind speed based on a machine learning algorithm:implications for wind energy assessment

Boming Liu et al.

Summary: Accurate estimation of wind speed at wind turbine hub height is important for wind energy assessment and exploitation. The traditional power law method (PLM) can lead to uncertainties, especially under unstable conditions. In this study, a random forest (RF) machine learning algorithm is used to estimate wind speeds at hub heights beyond the traditional limit of 100-120 m. The RF model shows advantages over the PLM model, considering factors such as surface friction and heat transfer. The findings have implications for the wind energy industry.

Large CO2 Emitters as Seen From Satellite: Comparison to a Gridded Global Emission Inventory

Frederic Chevallier et al.

Summary: Using NASA's OCO satellites, we have retrieved large-scale fossil fuel CO2 emissions globally and compared them with a global inventory. The OCO emission retrievals explain more than one third of the inventory variance and show consistent variations in emission levels across different time scales. This suggests that the retrieval-inventory differences are mostly random and trends can be calculated reliably in areas with favorable observing conditions.
